Governor of NSW visits Macquarie University

The Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), paid his inaugural visit to Macquarie University on Friday, June 5, to declare open a new section of University Avenue.

The Governor and Mrs Hurley were met by the Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor of Macquarie University, and enjoyed a campus tour and lunch with senior staff after the opening ceremony.

According to the Macquarie University Act (1989), the Governor of New South Wales is the ex officio Visitor of the university. The role traditionally oversees autonomous non-profit organisations and intervenes in the internal affairs of the institution.

In modern times, the role is ceremonial and represents the relationship between Macquarie University and the state. Governor Hurley is the seventh Visitor of the University since its founding in 1964.

Macquarie University’s roads service almost 40,000 students, 4,000 staff and public traffic in the neighbouring Macquarie Park. University Avenue in particular carries a significant volume of traffic throughout the day. The road reconstruction has been designed as the major campus thoroughfare and will better facilitate the traffic flow.

In an effort to create a more sustainable, vibrant and attractive campus, the new University Avenue features design elements to manage storm water and minimise environmental degradation. Its new location also moves traffic further away the centre of campus, allowing for the development of a more pedestrian-friendly heart of the university.

Macquarie University moves up in global rankings

Macquarie University has moved up nine places to equal 254th according to the 2014/15 QS World University Rankings, released today, Sept. 16.

Although they publish the standings of only the top 400 universities, QS assesses more than 3,000 institutions worldwide on research, teaching, employability and international outlook.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Corporate Engagement and Advancement Professor David Wilkinson said that while Macquarie’s strategic direction was not influenced by rankings, it was nonetheless pleasing to see the university’s global standing and reputation rise.

“Each of the major rankings systems measures different things, and each of their methodologies are controversial in their own way,” he explained. “However, as Macquarie continues on its trajectory to greater international prominence in research discovery, and in transformative teaching and learning, we expect to see many of these broad indicators reflecting that upward trend.”

In August Macquarie learned it had also moved up in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, where the university had improved by 26 places to 239th globally.

The third of the major international rankings—the Times Higher Education World University Rankings—will be released on October 1.
