Bond University celebrates 25th Anniversary this week

Australia’s first and only fully private university, Bond University on the Gold Coast celebrates its 25th Anniversary this week with a program of activities involving alumni from around the globe.

Bond Law School

Study law at Bond University

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Tim Brailsford, said the 25th Anniversary was a significant milestone for the university, which has grown to more than 4,000 students and 1,000 employees since its opening.

Bond University was seen initially as an oddity by the higher education sector when it first launched in 1989 and it would be fair to say there was an element of skepticism about its ability to grow, but that time has long passed,” said Professor Brailsford.

Bond University is now highly regarded internationally with Bond graduates in senior positions across a range of disciplines both in Australia and around the world.

“We have established a reputation which is the envy of many higher education institutions and the university is primed for significant growth and further development over the next twenty-five years.”

Professor Brailsford said Bond’s success owes much to the vision, drive and passion of a dedicated and energetic group of business and community figures who believed that the Gold Coast needed its own university.

He said the entrepreneurial spirit and “have a go attitude” that is synonymous with the Gold Coast overall sowed the seeds for the university and has been part of its DNA since the outset.

“Innovation and entrepreneurship have been the hallmarks of our success over the past two and a half decades, and Bond University has matured, proven itself and defied the critics of its early days. We are now firmly established and respected by our peers,” he said. “We have created an environment which attracts ambitious and driven people both at a student and academic staff level—it is one of our points of difference.”

Bond has led the sector in innovation which includes the accelerated learning model, commitment to small-group learning and personal mentoring, international diversity, cutting-edge facilities, quality teaching faculty and continual innovation in the development of new programs.

The university has a packed week of activities and events this week leading up to the 25th Anniversary Gala Ball on Saturday night (May 17) at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The university’s namesake, Alan Bond, will be a guest at the Gala Ball which looks set to host around 1,000 guests including alumni from all corners of the world.

Homecoming – Bond Community Day will be held on Friday, May 16 with a variety of activities ranging from a Business Leaders Breakfast to sports events and university tours.

University of Newcastle celebrates Scholars’ Week

Academic excellence is being recognized and rewarded this week, June 3 – 7, 2013, with the University of Newcastle holding its annual Scholars’ Week celebrations.

This year, 1,500 scholarships worth $5 million are being awarded to University of Newcastle students. Two hundred fifty scholarships are funded by donations from members of the community, businesses and alumni. The remainder are funded by the Commonwealth Government and the university.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said Scholars’ Week was about celebrating and recognizing achievement and potential, as well as thanking the university’s generous supporters.

“Scholars’ Week embodies one of the most important aspects of our university’s mission—a commitment to equity.

“The university leads the country in providing more opportunities for people with ability and determination to enter and succeed in higher education regardless of their background—such as the students we are celebrating this week.”

Newcastle vice-chancellor went on to say that the financial help the University of Newcastle receives from individual donors, businesses, industry, professional and community organizations to support these scholars is invaluable.

Central Coast student Marcos Cousens-Schulz who suffers from cerebral palsy is one of the students being being recognized.

Eighteen-year-old Marcos is studying a Bachelor of Information Technology and is also one of the winners of the Shaping Futures Scholarship.

“I’ll be using my scholarship to help pay for transport to and from university. Sometimes I have to take a taxi to get to lectures and it costs around $80 each way. This scholarship will help ease the financial pressure on my family to pay for transport.”

Other scholarships being awarded include the Edith and Joseph McBride Scholarship, which supports a nursing student studying at the Central Coast campus and four scholarships specifically for Central Coast students, including one for an Indigenous student, funded by Delta Electricity.

University of Newcastle International Scholarships

Scholarship applications will be accepted between January 1 and August 31 each year. To apply for a scholarship you must answer the relevant questions on the application form.

Scholarships are awarded to eligible applicants on the basis of academic merit and through a highly competitive process. The award of research scholarships may also take into account areas of research strength or areas of research in line with the strategic directions of the university.

For more information and for a full list of scholarships that may be available to you, contact OzTREKK!
