  • Ensures that you have the science knowledge appropriate for the MD.
  • Practical sessions typically include laboratory work where you gain hands-on practical experience.

Patient and Doctor

  • You will be taught clinical skills, diagnostic methods, “bedside manner” and informed about patient safety.
  • This theme is taught in the clinical schools.

Population Medicine

  • Introduces students to subjects such as public health, evidence-based medicine, statistics, and health economics.

Sydney Medical School Dean talks about the MD program

Teaching and learning objectives of the Doctor of Medicine

The Sydney MD aims to produce medical graduates who are committed to rational, compassionate health care and medical research of the highest quality.

University of Sydney Medical School

Study medicine at the University of Sydney

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program encourages enrollment of students from diverse backgrounds and aims to help them to become graduates responsive to the health needs of individuals, families and communities and committed to improving the health care system at all levels.

The success of the program will be measured by the extent to which University of Sydney graduates maintain lifelong, self-directed learning and the pursuit of evidence-based medical practice, and the extent to which they initiate, lead and support advances in clinical medicine, research, education and community service.

Features of the award program include

  • an integrated learning curriculum including a research methodology component;
  • problem-based learning with online support;
  • clinical experience at leading hospitals from the second week;
  • a research or capstone project;
  • research opportunities at world-leading institutions;
  • encouragement to undertake international electives; and
  • in-depth exposure to rural clinical practice.

The program is organised into four main curriculum themes which describe the important professional characteristics students will acquire by the completion of the program.

The four themes are

  • basic and clinical sciences;
  • patient and doctor;
  • population medicine; and
  • personal and professional development.

The themes provide the framework for the goals of the program, the curriculum and assessment. The learning within the four themes necessarily overlaps and their program objectives should therefore be read as a single collective.

OzTREKK Funny Friday

A pregnant woman who has been in a coma for six months following an automobile accident has given birth to twins, a baby girl and a baby boy. Awakening from her coma and learning that she had given birth to twins, she asked if names had already been given to them.

“Yes,” her doctor informed her, “because we didn’t know if you would ever come out of the coma, your brother Henry gave them their names.”

“Oh dear God,” the woman moaned. “My brother Henry is the family idiot. What in the world did he name them?”

“He named the baby girl Denise,” answered the physician.

“Well, that’s not so bad,” the woman replied. “What did he name the baby boy?”

The doctor responded regretfully, “DeNephew.”
