About the Monash Graduate-entry MBBS program

The Monash University graduate-entry medical program at the Gippsland* campus is four years in length and is only available to those applicants who have previously successfully completed an undergraduate degree. The Medical School enrolls 60 students each year into the graduate-entry Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course and is based at purpose-built facilities at Monash University’s Gippsland campus. The Gippsland campus is located in the township of Churchill. The 160-kilometre drive from Melbourne takes about two hours, heading east on the Princes Highway.

With a focus on rural health, all student teaching and clinical placements take place throughout Gippsland. Students will predominantly spend the first year in the purpose-built Gippsland facility and undertake clinical rotations at hospitals, community health centres and general practices over the four years of the course.

Program: Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
Location: Gippsland Campus, Churchill, Victoria (approx. 2 hours southeast of Melbourne)
Semester intake: February
Duration: 4 years
Application deadline: September 27, 2013

Admissions Criteria/Entry Requirements for Canadians:

1. Grade Point Average (GPA)

Applicants will need to have achieved a weighted GPA or qualification of 5.0 (out of 7.0) The GPA is assessed on the last three full-time equivalent years of the most recent undergraduate degree undertaken. Successive years are weighted x1, x2 and x3, and so the greatest weight is given to the most recent results. Bonus points are given to applicants with PhD or Master’s by Research qualifications (0.2 and 0.1 respectively).

2. MCAT or GAMSAT Results

The MCAT (North American Medical College Admissions Test) is required for admission of international students into this course. Registration for MCAT must be completed by August 2 for a test sitting by August 16 with results released September 17.

Minimum MCAT requirement: 8/8/M/8  (8/8/8)

MCAT test results from January 2011 onward will be accepted.

3. Interview Results

Selection into the medical program is based upon a combination of the applicant’s aptitude test, academic studies, and performance in a multi-mini interview (MMI). This interview format allows the faculty to better determine applicants who possess the desired personal qualities required to succeed in the MBBS program at Monash University. The MMI format allows each applicant to be assessed by trained interviewers. MMI stations comprise a series of scenarios and associated questions focusing on an applicant’s relevant personal qualities including motivation, communication skills, critical thinking and ethical/empathetic reasoning.

Total Number of Places in the Program: 60

Number of Places Available for International Students: up to 20

*About the Gippsland Campus

Subject to final government approval, our Gippsland campus will join with the University of Ballarat to form a new university. Legislation was introduced to the Victorian Parliament to amend the University of Ballarat Act 2010, to change the name of the university to Federation University Australia from January 1, 2014.

What does this mean for current students enrolled at the Gippsland campus?

All students admitted to Monash University courses in and before 2013 at the Gippsland campus will remain Monash students until they have completed the academic course of study they enrolled in, subject to normal course progression. This includes students who have commenced Semester Two 2013. These students will be expected to remain at the Gippsland campus and should they successfully complete their course will graduate with a Monash University degree.

The Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) graduate entry program (course code 3952) will continue to be offered as a Monash University degree from the Gippsland campus. Enquiry and application procedures remain unchanged.
