This four-year undergraduate pharmacy program is an integrated program consisting of lectures, practicals, tutorials and experiential learning through clinical placements and simulated learning environments. The program will build upon the student's existing knowledge of science while focusing on material that specifically relates to the knowledge, skills and attributes required as a pharmacist.

Students will be equipped to provide a vital primary health care role as they counsel people on the best use and management of medications, provide advice on the symptoms and management of common ailments, prepare and formulate medications and educate the community on a wide range of health and well-being matters.

At the University of Newcastle, Bachelor of Pharmacy students will use innovative and state-of-the art educational technology to supplement face-to-face lectures, tutorials and experiential learning, through clinical placements and simulated learning environments.

Unique Features of the Program

Clinical placements start in the first year of study and continue throughout the degree providing students with substantial clinical experience in a variety of settings both locally and nationally as part of the degree. This ensures students are continually putting into practice the theory and hands-on skills they learn throughout the degree.

Newcastle pharmacy students will gain clinical experience in a variety of health settings, which may include community facilities, hospitals, rural pharmacies, aged care facilities.

To prepare students for clinical placements, they build practical skills through inter-professional simulated learning activities in our fully functioning demonstration pharmacy, hospital based simulation wards and the Hunter New England Simulation Centre.

The clinical placement component of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is substantial and occurs in a range of diverse clinical contexts throughout the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast and University Department of Rural Health sites.

Throughout Newcastle's pharmacy studies, students are provided with the opportunity to develop outstanding research capabilities. Students at a research-intensive university like Newcastle will be under the guidance of experienced academic staff who are world leaders in their respective fields.

Newcastle Bachelor of Pharmacy students can enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree.
