From 2017, Monash University will replace the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) with the new Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours / Master of Pharmacy combined degree, Australia's first integrated BPharm (Hons)/ MPharm degree.

Monash University's Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences engages in world-class research and has a long history as a leading provider of undergraduate and postgraduate education. The faculty's curriculum is purpose designed for the study of pharmacy and pharmaceutical science and taught by discipline experts.

The new BPharm (Hons)/ MPharm is a graduate-entry degree that will develop the relevant practical and analytical skills required for pharmacy practice, as well as generic skills such as oral and written communication, critical thinking, inquiry, learning for life, numeracy and information literacy and leadership.

The course develops through the six themes, the first three being Structure and Function of the Body, Drug Structure, Disposition and Action, and Professional Practice, which come together in the final three themes: Comprehensive Care, Inquiry and Innovation and Professional Experience respectively.

The master's portion in the fifth year combines the 48-week paid internship plus courses and/or work-integrated learning (which can be extended into the research program).

Embedded practice experiences during Stage 1 will prepare students to achieve the necessary competencies to enter the preregistration period. This will include 12 weeks in a variety of clinical settings to develop and give context for skill development.

Graduates from Canada, who wish to become a pharmacist upon their return to Canada, should visit the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada website for accreditation and certification information: http://www.pebc.ca/

Traditionally, pharmacy degrees in Australia have offered students a five-year pathway to apply to register as a pharmacist (generally a four-year bachelor degree plus a one-year internship). The new Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours / Master of Pharmacy combined degree will enable graduates to apply to register within the same five-year time frame, but offers the additional advantage of doing so with a master's degree as well as a bachelor's.

Graduate qualifications in pharmacy from Australian universities are recognized internationally. Graduates from Canada who wish to become a pharmacist upon their return to Canada should visit the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada website for accreditation and certification information: http://www.pebc.ca/. Graduates of an Australian pharmacy degree must also apply for certification through the provincial regulatory body in the Canadian province in which they wish to work.

 

Admissions Criteria/Entry Requirements for Canadians

Applicants to the Monash Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours / Master of Pharmacy must have

  • completed a bachelor degree;
  • met the English, Chemistry and Math program prerequisites; and
  • an overall minimum average of 80%.

Application Deadline: While there is no set application deadline, applicants are strongly encouraged by Monash University Pharmacy School to submit their applications before the end of September for the February intake.
