The James Cook University Law School offers the Bachelor of Laws (Graduate) degree which is a three-year program. It is designed for students who already hold a bachelor degree in another field and wish to gain a qualification in law. The JCU School of Law links up with local law firms and the Community Legal Centre, which offer students opportunities to gain practical legal skills. This degree is an approved qualification for admission to practice in Queensland.

The Bachelor of Laws degree at JCU is designed to
- satisfy the academic requirements for admission to the legal profession. The course has been accredited by the Queensland Barristers and Solicitors Board, for practice as a solicitor or barrister in Queensland;
- prepare students for employment in the business world or in other areas such as government or agencies in environmental and coastal management control, natural resources development, etc.;
- encourage independent thought and critical analysis of legal issues and develop an interest in law reform; and
- train students to relate their learning to community legal problems.

JCU's law program provides students with foundation law subjects, along with an exciting and broad-ranging elective program. Law graduates benefit from a practical approach and an understanding of the complexities of modern society. A mooting competition is held each year, offering students practical experience in addressing legal argument to a mock court.

  • active program of conferences and workshops, which involve judges and senior academics
