With accredited programs and a comprehensive range of degrees there is no better place than Griffith University to start your career as an oral health professional. Extensive hands-on experience, modern clinical and laboratory facilities and teachers renowned for their expertise in their field, provide a stimulating and enjoyable learning environment.

Begun in 2018, the Bachelor of Dental Health Science offers a new, innovative curriculum where students receive real clinical exposure from the first year of study, and work alongside oral health professionals who are world experts in their field.

Completing a Bachelor of Dental Health Science and Griffith's two-year Master of Dentistry program provides the education and skills you need to apply for registration as a dentist.

Griffith Bachelor of Dental Health Science students will also study and work alongside students of Dental Technology, Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene.

As a student, you will have access to world-class facilities within the new $150-million purpose-built Griffith Health Centre on the Gold Coast Campus. These include a 96-chair dental clinic, commercial dental and clinical skills laboratories, high-level IT facilities, and research facilities.

Understanding Pathways

The Bachelor of Dental Health Science degree is the first step towards a career in dentistry and oral health. You will learn from extensive hands-on training from the first year of your studies.

You will study and work alongside registered dentists and dental specialists in real life settings, including in regional areas and in our modern dental clinic and specialised laboratories in the new Griffith Health Centre. You will enhance your skills through professional practice placements.

Completion of the Bachelor of Dental Health Science provides automatic entry into the two-year Master of Dentistry, during which all of the dental specialities are taught to a level where you will become a caring, competent general dental practitioner. Successful completion of the two programs (5 years) will allow you to apply for registration as a dentist with all of the State Dental Boards in Australia and Canada.

Further study and research can lead to a career in academic teaching or specialty practice.

Unique Features of the Program

You will have the opportunity to undertake community placements in state schools, rural and remote communities and in Indigenous and aged care. You will also work as part of an oral health team (including dental, oral health therapy and dental technology students) to undertake a research project that identifies an oral health issue and provides solutions.

Beyond the Great Dividing Range dentists are as rare as surfboards, which is why an ongoing program by Griffith University's School of Dentistry and Oral Health for final-year students in the rural community of Brewarrina is so important. Brewarrina is a town in North West New South Wales, Australia on the banks of the Barwon River in Brewarrina Shire.

Students experience first-hand the challenges and cheer of rural life and the urgent need for their skills as part of the program.

Professional Certification/Accreditation Information

Griffith University's Bachelor of Dental Health Science / Master of Dentistry program accreditation will be sought from the Australian Dental Council in affiliation with the Dental Board of Australia. Additionally, the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) recognizes the reciprocal agreement between the Australian Dental Council and the Commission of Dental Accreditation of Canada, which allows for accredited graduates of either body to practice dentistry in Australia or Canada.
