The University of Melbourne is one of Australia's top universities.
AsiaWeek magazine consistently ranks Melbourne among the top
three universities in the Asia-Pacific region for its academic
reputation. In 2001, the University won the Good Universities
Guide 'Australian University of the Year' award for 2001-2002
for its international standing. Melbourne is Australia's leading
research university with extensive links to industry, government
and other institutions. The University of Melbourne also receives
more research funding than any other Australian university.
Established
in 1853, the University is the second oldest in Australia,
and is one of the few Australian universities to offer students
a truly campus-based experience. Set on 22.5 hectares, the
main campus is compact and beautifully landscaped with its
own theatres, art galleries, banks, book shop, computer suppliers,
sport facilities, sushi bar, café lounges and licensed
restaurants. Fifteen libraries service a total of 11 faculties
or colleges including the Baillieu Library, one of the great
libraries of the southern hemisphere. For those who yearn
for bustling city life, a 15-minute walk or five-minute tram
ride takes you to the heart of downtown Melbourne.
The
University welcomes applications from international students
for undergraduate or postgraduate degree study in eleven faculties,
the School of Graduate Studies and the Melbourne Business
School. Degree programs are offered at Bachelor, Masters and
PhD levels in: Architecture, Building and Planning; Arts; Economics
and Commerce; Education; Engineering; Law; Medicine, Dentistry
and Health Sciences; Music; and, Science and Veterinary Science.
Teaching in agricultural and related sciences is provided
by the Institute of Land and Food Resources. The University
offers twenty double degree courses for undergraduate students
and one of the most comprehensive Study Abroad Programs in
Australia.
With
over 36,000 students, including 6,000 international students
from almost 100 different countries, Melbourne is truly an
international campus. The University provides a wide range
of support services to assist students with housing, employment,
health, child care, counselling, legal and financial aid as
well as learning skills. Student accommodation is available
on campus, and University apartments are also available within
walking distance. International students receive priority
placement for accommodation. Scholarships are also available
for international students and cover the cost of tuition fees
and/or a living allowance. Scholarships are usually awarded
on the basis of merit.
