Newcastle’s comparative advantage is that their combined Juris Doctor / Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice is the only fully integrated law degree and practical legal training course offered at an Australian university that is centred on acting for real clients.

As part of the GDLP, students undertake 285 hours of legal professional workplace experience. A minimum of 105 hours of that practical experience is undertaken at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre, under the supervision of the law school’s solicitors. Newcastle Law School staff also assist students to arrange external placements at other law firms to make up the remaining 180 professional training hours. This is very attractive to potential employers and gives Newcastle graduates a significant advantage over graduates from other universities whose only practical experience has involved simulated client advice sessions, rather than providing advice and other legal assistance to real clients.

Did you know that the city of Newcastle is also a great place to live? Yep, it was recently included in National Geographic’s global list of “Smart Cities.”

Newcastle Law School offers complimentary legal services

A free and unique legal service aimed at assisting those in need, while also providing University of Newcastle (UON) students with real-world experience, hit Newcastle Beach recently.

Newcastle Law School offers complimentary legal services

Now in its 14th year, Law on the Beach, run by UON’s Legal Centre, will hold drop-in consultations at Newcastle Beach Surf Club and the City Campus across January and February in order to increase access to legal services for people in need of guidance.

Newcastle Law School students in their penultimate year in law and social work, alongside experienced lawyers, donate their time and skills to assisting disadvantaged members of the public.

Daniel Richards, a fifth year Bachelor of Laws (Hons)/Diploma of Legal Practice student, will take time out of the university holidays to assist the program. The 22-year-old, who is originally from Muswellbrook, said he was keen to advance his skills while helping those in need.

“It’s one thing learning theory in the classroom, but it’s completely different applying what we’ve learnt to real-world cases. It’s an invaluable experience that makes a huge difference to both the students and the community.

“Newcastle Beach is such a great setting, as it creates a really relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is in shorts and t-shirts and the sessions are conversational rather than a formal meeting,” he said.

Director of the Newcastle Law School Legal Centre, Mr Shaun McCarthy, said the students involved were extremely competent and keen to develop their knowledge, whilst displaying understanding and sensitivity to the issues at hand.

“Law on the Beach provides a unique opportunity for the community to access advice and assistance with their legal needs, as well as providing our exceptional students with real-world experience.

“Legal services are often inaccessible and can be confronting for younger members of the community due to their cost. The fact this program is so successful after 14 years is an indication that the service is still a necessary one,” Mr McCarthy said.

Drop-in sessions will run until Feb. 21.

Newcastle Juris Doctor course provides strong foundation

In 2015, the University of Newcastle Law School created a new course (a foundation subject) called “Legal System and Method 1,” which aims to assist students to acquire the skills they need to complete their first year of the JD earlier in the year. The subject has been developed following discussions with current JD students and was officially implemented in trimester 1, 2016 (just before the regular semester 1 begins; and as such, requires students to be at Newcastle a few weeks prior to the traditional late-February program start).

“Legal System and Method I” is the first foundational course in the Juris Doctor / Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice. It introduces students to the core intellectual and analytical skills in the discipline of law. In addition, the course begins the process of professional education through the study of professional written communication skills. It also orients students to the core subjects they study in the first year of their degree and to the University Legal Centre, where, in later years, they will undertake studies relevant to the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.

Newcastle Law on the Beach celebrates 13 years

Novocastrians (from Newcastle) needing legal advice are encouraged to tap into the expertise of the University of Newcastle‘s Legal Centre as they run Law on the Beach, a free community legal advice service.

Now in its 13th year, Law on the Beach runs for five days over summer, bringing law school students and lawyers from their King Street building to Newcastle beach.

University of Newcastle Law School

Newcastle Law on the Beach celebrates 13 years

For the first time, this year a student from the university’s social work program will be part of every group of law students offering advice.

Law on the Beach allows later year law students and social work students to gain practical experience towards their degrees as they work to help members of the community.

A student-run program, Law on the Beach, has provided free legal advice to hundreds of clients in a very Novocastrian setting.

This practical program is one of the many ways the University of Newcastle Law School develops experienced, sought-after legal graduates.

Director of the University of Newcastle Legal Centre Shaun McCarthy said all members of the community were welcome to visit the legal clinic for free advice, but this year the Centre was focusing on the younger members of the Newcastle community.

“Often young people do not have the life experience or resources to stand up for themselves in a matter involving the law. We aim to change that by providing a casual setting to have that legal conversation,” he said.

All questions and cases are welcome by the legal clinic team, from traffic fines to employment discrimination and everything in between. This year, the clinic will run Jan. 19 and 28; and Feb. 2, 9 and 16 at the Newcastle Surf Club on Newcastle Beach.
