MQ Health’s Doctors in Training

As Australia’s first fully integrated, university-led academic health sciences centre, MQ Health at Macquarie University brings together world-class clinical care, teaching and research. Doctors in Training

MQ Health’s Doctors in Training program offers an exciting new opportunity for recently graduated doctors and doctors seeking specialty training, including interns, fellows and registrars. Through this program, MQ Health helps address the national shortage of postgraduate clinical training places in Australia, by unlocking the private healthcare system and creating additional training opportunities.

OzTREKK JCU Medical School orientation

Saturday, February 16, 2013 was a beautiful, hot day in Townsville, Queensland. A group of 26 JCU Medical School students and other JCU graduate students (even some parents!) gathered that morning for the famous OzTREKK Orientation, meeting at the JCU Creative Arts Building. Everyone was primed to enjoy the OzTREKK Welcome Breakfast!

A few JCU Medical School students had already met the day before during JCU’s International Student Orientation, where they enjoyed free pizza, games, markets, and an interesting wildlife show—creepy snakes included! Where else could you truly enjoy tropical goodies than at James Cook University? Known as one of the world’s leading institutions focusing on the tropics, Australia’s JCU is surrounded by the spectacular ecosystems of the rainforests of the wet tropics, the dry savannahs, and the iconic Great Barrier Reef.

OzTREKK Director and Co-founder Beth McNally was also at the Townsville campus that day, meeting with faculty members and checking in with all OzTREKK students she happened to meet along the way.

After the new JCU students gathered and shared orientation stories, the group was ready for breakfast! Beth ushered everyone into her Kia Carnival eight-seater van—AKA, the OzTREKK Shuttle—and a “Maxie Taxi,” a vehicle that can hold up to 12 passengers. The group headed downtown to a café on Flinders Street, called The Sweatshop.” Flinders is a cool, funky street in the heart of Townsville, about a 20-minute drive from the JCU campus. The new JCU Medical School students and other JCU graduate students and their guests enjoyed breakfast at a very long table—long enough to seat everyone! The big hits of the delicious breakfast? The café’s natural juices (the apple-pear juice was so yummy!), and their famous “jaffles.” Creating scrumptious jaffles is what The Sweatshop is known for. The toasted sandwich maker presses the edges of the sandwich together to form a seal during toasting. Popular filling choices include cheese, on its own or together with tomato or ham; and sweet toppings such as jam, banana, or chocolate spread. Beth had the breakfast jaffle and would definitely recommend it!

After breakfast, the OzTREKK Shuttle revved up and proved to be highly valuable that day. Almost all new JCU students at Townsville used the OzTREKK Shuttle, which was great! We know how important it is for you to be well established, organized and set up before you commence your studies.

The route included Townsville Stocklands Shopping Centre (many times!), Kmart, Toys R Us (for a bikes return!), The Strand, Anaconda Sports Store, The Domain shopping centre, and all the new JCU students’ houses, apartments, hostels in between from Riverside Drive to Walker Street, just up from Sturt Street downtown. Beth and her group searched for houses and units, bought bikes and returned bikes, found rice cookers and Asian cuisine, found houses and JCU residence halls! All in all, it was a fun two days, and even on Sunday, the OzTREKK Shuttle was busy!

The evening of the last OzTREKK Shuttle service, one of the new JCU students passed around a long student list with email contacts of all the new OzTREKK students at the OzTREKK JCU orientation events, so that parties could be planned for future get-togethers. Beth noted that it was really nice to see the OzTREKK torch being passed on to the students themselves—we made the connections, and lifelong friendships started to form through the OzTREKK events! So much fun and very rewarding!

Best wishes go out to all of OzTREKK’s JCU students!
