Start your study-in-Australia countdown right

Moving to the other side of the planet can be stressful. You’re about to embark on one of the most exciting journeys of your life, and if you let stress get the better of you, it can lead to unnecessary anxiety and forgotten tasks.

Start your study-in-Australia countdown right

It’s not too early to start your pre-departure checklist

Now is the time to be confident and excited, and the best way to be that way is to know you’re prepared. Ease your mind by tackling the countdown as systematically as possible. Let’s go through a list of the things you should be considering before your departure!

Documents

Print out all your offer documents, proof of enrollment, etc. Consider printing copies of your resume, references from previous landlords, banking statements, copies of your driver’s licence, etc. as these will be required for your accommodation search, and possibly when you land in Australia. Make a list of all the documents you will need, make several copies (as required), and organise it all in a folder that you will put in your carry-on.

Cell phone

Unlock your phone while still in Canada and use someone else’s card in your phone to test it out.

Travel itinerary

Keep an eye on your flights as they could change and not notify you. Find out how early you need to be at the airport.

Money

Have you got your Australian bank account set up? If not, now is the time to get that organised. Most banks allow you to open an account from Canada, up to three months before you arrive. You’ll need access to money/cheques etc. when you’re searching for accommodation (if you’re going to be living in a private rental), and many real estate agents/landlords will not take cash.

Location, location, location

Where are you headed? We have three words: Google Street View! It’s a good idea to look at your campus and city maps. Check out the transit schedule and snoop around your university’s website; they have an “international” section with lots of helpful tips!

Pack

Organise your carry-on (documents folder!).

You may not need to start packing now, but at least consider the main items. Consider what type of clothing you’ll need. Summer only? Winter? Believe it or not, Melbourne can get quite chilly during their winter months, June, July and August. It’s a good idea to take your fall items at minimum. Even Sydney, Gold Coast, and Brisbane has cold nights in winter. Start your packing list and get tips from YouTube regarding the best way to pack—you’ll get a lot of ideas! It’s also a good idea to include a backpack/duffel for when you travel in Australia.

Hopefully this list will help you feel more settled and relaxed during this pre-departure phase! If you have concerns, please reach out to your OzTREKK Admissions Officer! Do you have any pre-departure tips? Send them our way: info@oztrekk.com.

OzTREKK pre-departure events a success!

At OzTREKK, we are proud to assist our students in any way we can—including holding in-person pre-departure get-togethers. Our pre-dep prep aims to guide students through the final steps as they prepare to live and study in Australia. It is also a great opportunity to meet other students who will also be travelling to Australia to study. This year, we hit Toronto and Vancouver, and we are so pleased we had a chance to meet you!

OzTREKK pre-departure events a success!

This year, many of our OzTREKK students and some of their family members joined us for these important seminars, and, as always, it was just as fun for OzTREKK staff as it was for the students—just check out video slideshow! What a great way to prepare for your trek to Australia and get the latest 4-1-1 on what to expect—and meet some students who will be studying with you!

So, we send out a big thank you to everyone who came out to participate!

Getting ready to study in Australia? We got your back.

When we talk about pre-departure prep, we’re talking about the whole kit and caboodle: understanding your offer letter, OSHC, student visas, money, accommodation options, travel… and more! We also know that you are about to fly around the globe to the other side of the planet, and while this is an exciting time in your life, it’s also a bit stressful.

Getting ready to study in Australia? We got your back.

Former OzTREKK students during our pre-departure seminar

Cue OzTREKK.

In a few short weeks, you will be an international student in Australia. An OzTREKK pre-departure webinar and in-person meet-up will guide you through the final steps as you prepare to live and study in Australia. It is also a great opportunity to meet other students who will be at your university, and in your program! Whether you have already accepted your offer, will be doing so in the next couple of weeks/months, or are yet to meet the conditions of your offer, you are invited to attend.

We strongly recommend that you attend a session!

OzTREKK’s Pre-departure In-person Events and Webinars

A few months ago, we surveyed current students, and one recurring suggestion was that OzTREKKers would like the opportunity to meet one another prior to landing in Australia. So, we’re taking that advice and are hosting a student meet-up and social event!

We have a fun event planned in Toronto and one planned for Vancouver as well, and you’re all invited! We are going to keep it casual, Australian and informative. We will have a few brief presentations, but the intention of the evening is for you to meet and build some lasting friendships. Don’t forget: meeting in person can equal meeting potential roommates and lifelong friends!

University of Sydney has got some great new accommodation

Are you heading to the University of Sydney for the semester 1, 2016 intake? Wondering about accommodation? They’re boasting some brand new digs!

Check out the largest self-contained student accommodation facility of its kind ever built in Australia. The new Queen Mary Building opened its doors to 800 residents in July 2015. The residence features a range of fully furnished, self-catered single rooms. With features like sky lounges, an exciting residential life program and 24-hour support, the Queen Mary Building is the place to be to make the most of your time at the University of Sydney.

Opened in October 2015, Abercrombie Student Accommodation brings you contemporary on-campus studio apartments located just minutes from classrooms. The new student community in the heart of Darlington will house up to 200 students from Australia and all over the world.

Living on or near the main University of Sydney campus puts you right in the heart of student life, so you can make the most of your study and leisure time.

Enjoy your own space

Single rooms are great for settling down for some quiet time. Rooms come fully furnished with a bed, wardrobes and study area with access to shared bathrooms on each floor. You’ll even get your own mini fridge to stash away some midnight snacks!

Fantastic residential life events

At the Queen Mary Building, Sydney Uni makes sure to provide plenty of events to help you meet new people, support your studies and learn new things.

Right on campus

Short of setting up camp in your lecture theatre, on-campus living is closest you’ll get to living right next to your classes. You’ll be able to roll out of bed and be in class within 10 minutes!

Great facilities

Cook up a storm in the communal kitchen, get some assignments done in the study room and hang out with friends in the common lounges.

Safety and security

Staff are available around the clock to provide a helping hand, whether you’re locked out of your room or just need some support. Facilities have CCTV coverage, a 24-hour staff presence, electronic card access to rooms and intermittent campus security patrolling the site.

Getting ready to go: cell phones

There are a lot of things to think about when it comes to planning your time in Australia. Have you found accommodation? Did you open an Aussie bank account? Did you pack your sunscreen?

We live in a lightning-speed, technologically enhanced age. If you’re heading to Oz soon, another item on your to-do list is probably “find out more about cell phones in Australia.”

Study in Australia

Unlock your phone, and buy an Aussie SIM card!

You’ve got a selection of Australian mobile phone and plan providers.

  • Telstra
  • Optus
  • Vodafone
  • Virgin
  • amaysim

Brands are actually similar to North America’s:

  • Apple
  • Sony
  • HTC
  • Huawei
  • LG
  • Nokia
  • Samsung

Which one is best? Which one will work for you? Best to check out You Compare, a website that gives you a list of providers and phones and does the math for you http://youcompare.com.au/

SIM cards

What’s a SIM card (aka subscriber identity module or subscriber identification module)? Basically, it’s the tiny removable plastic card inside your phone—the phone’s “brain.” The SIM card can be transferred between different mobile devices.

SIM cards that are issued by providers with an associated contract are called SIM-only deals. Common examples are the GSM networks in the United States, Canada, Australia, the UK. Many businesses offer the ability to remove the SIM lock from a phone, effectively making it possible to then use the phone on any network by inserting a different SIM card.

Option #1: Use your Canadian Mobile Phone

Get your current phone“unlocked.” If you don’t, you will be slammed with roaming charges, and roaming charges are bank account vampires. Unlock your phone by contacting your cell phone plan provider. Find out which frequency your phone uses and then match it to the Australian frequencies.

Next, buy a SIM card. One of the best value, flexible, pay-as-you-go SIMs available in Australia is with Amaysim, powered by the Optus 4G network, which is currently covering 97% of Australians! You can get a SIM card from other companies, but just be sure to check the carrier and the frequencies vs your phone’s frequencies.

Option #2: Buy a phone in Australia

There are five popular mobile phone companies across Australia, thus giving you plenty of options. You can track down great deals and even better phone rates. The disadvantage is that your Aussie phone may not work in Canada. If you’re travelling frequently between Canada and Australia, you’ll be left phoneless while in the Great White North.

Option #3: Buy your own phone in Canada online

If you purchase a quad-band, unlocked phone, then you’re in business. The quad-band can access the four frequencies used in both countries. Unlocked means you’re able to change the SIM card. When you’re in Australia, you’ll take out your Canadian SIM card, replace it with Australian SIM card (see option #1), therefore using a local number and calling rates.
