Join the Monash pharmacy webinar Oct. 12 to find out why they are ranked #2 in the world

Pharmacy is a rewarding career, but it’s also a challenging and demanding one.

Think about the rows upon rows of medicines behind a pharmacy counter. A pharmacist needs to have an in-depth knowledge of what every single one of those products does, how it might be of benefit and how it might do potential harm.

 Join the Monash pharmacy webinar Oct. 12

Learn more about studying at Monash Pharmacy

And that’s just the scientific side of the job.

Consider the hundreds of customers who will visit that pharmacist each day, each one with a specific ailment and a particular way of dealing with it; a different approach to medicine, a different level of scientific understanding (if any), a different set of language skills. Some will need a little bit of help, many will need a lot.

A pharmacist’s technical knowledge needs to be matched by his or her communication skills. In the vast majority of cases, a pharmacist is dealing directly with people and, without the ability to convey information well, or to understand patients’ concerns, they are really just a repository of very important information. So when Monash Pharmacy looks for students to join the faculty, they seek those who are both academically able and willing to learn the soft skills that are so vital for success in this profession—not only communication, but also teamwork, emotional empathy and the ability to make good judgments.

Have a degree? You can get your pharmacy degree in just two years!

Pharmacy degrees are great: you finish high school and then move directly to your professional four-year degree. Another bonus: Australian Bachelor of Pharmacy degrees are recognized internationally, so if you intend to practice in Canada, you would first apply for certification through your provincial regulatory body. Many OzTREKK students have followed this path and are now practicing pharmacists in Canada.

Introducing graduate-entry pharmacy at Monash University

If you hold a relevant degree, you may be able to enter into the third year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), receiving credit for much of the first two years of the program. That means you’ll finish your degree in two years.

What will you study?

If you enter the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) via the graduate-entry pathway, you will complete a pass/fail unit that runs just over four weeks and must be passed in order to receive credit for the first two years of the degree. The unit is run in the summer semester (January – February). Upon successfully completing the summer unit, you will then enter the third year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)!

  • Bachelor of Biomedical Science/Bachelor of Biomedicine/ Bachelor of Health Sciences;
  • Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences;
  • Bachelor of Science with subject completions in chemistry, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and mathematics.

If you’ve graduated with a Bachelor of Science, Monash will take into account the number of relevant subjects you’ve completed:

  • chemistry
  • physiology
  • biochemistry
  • pharmacology
  • mathematics

The units completed in the degree should be relevant and science-based. If a number of electives have been completed in arts, for instance, there may not be enough relevancy for consideration.

January 2018 will be the last intake for the graduate-entry Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) program. From 2019, Monash will be offering a graduate-entry pathway into the new three-year Bachelor of Pharmacy(Hons) / Master of Pharmacy program. This degree combo will allow students to graduate with both a bachelor and a master in only 3 years. OzTREKK Funny Friday

A front-end clerk in a pharmacy was admonished by the owner for missing too many sales. “I’m sorry,” the boss glowered. “But one more missed sale and you will be fired.”

The next customer who came into the pharmacy had a terrible cough. Between his coughing and sputtering, he asked the clerk for help. Unable to recall where the cough remedies were, the nervous clerk pointed to a box of Ex-Lax and said, “Here, buy this then go over to our cooler and take all of it with plenty of water.”

The customer thanked him and proceeded to follow the clerk’s instructions. Finishing his last glass of water, the customer exited the pharmacy. Once outside he stopped, took a few faltering steps, then hugged a telephone pole. The boss, having witnessed the entire scene, approached the clerk and asked him what he recommended.

“Ex-Lax,” said the clerk hesitantly.

“Ex-Lax!” yelled the boss. “That won’t help a cough!”

“Sure it does,” replied the clerk. “Look, he’s afraid to cough.”

Pharmacy programs in Australia are structured quite similarly to many other professional programs offered at Australian universities. Students can enter a Pharmacy program directly from high school. Students from Canada who have already completed an undergraduate degree may also apply for entry into Australian Bachelor of Pharmacy programs.

In Australia, there are two distinct pathways to studying Pharmacy, both of which will provide you with the professional training you need to become a pharmacist. These two pathways are the Bachelor of Pharmacy and the Master of Pharmacy.

Bachelor of Pharmacy: This is an undergraduate degree that leads to a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and is designed to equip students for a career in the Pharmacy profession. Australian students, like those from virtually all other Commonwealth countries except Canada, can enter the Bachelor of Pharmacy program directly from high school.

Master of Pharmacy: This is a graduate Pharmacy degree designed to equip students for a career in the Pharmacy profession. Students must have completed an undergraduate degree and specified prerequisite courses to be eligible for entry into a Master of Pharmacy program.

Both Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Pharmacy programs educate students to become pharmacists. The main difference is that the Bachelor of Pharmacy is offered at the undergraduate level, and the Master of Pharmacy is offered at the postgraduate level.
