Newcastle Law School students delivering complimentary legal service

What do amazing beach locations and law have in common? Why, the University of Newcastle’s Law on the Beach, of course!

Now in its 15th year, Law on the Beach runs for five weeks over summer, bringing Newcastle Law School students and lawyers from their Hunter Street location to Newcastle Beach.

Law on the Beach gives law students and social work students the opportunity to gain practical experience towards their degrees as they work to help members of the community.

The student-run program has provided free legal advice to hundreds of clients in a highly accessible and atypical setting, and is one of the many ways the law school develops experienced, sought-after legal graduates while at the same time providing a vital community service.

Director of the University of Newcastle Legal Centre, Mr Shaun McCarthy, said all members of the community were welcome to visit the legal clinic for free advice, but this year the centre was focusing on the younger members of the Newcastle community.

“Often young people do not have the life experience or resources to stand up for themselves in a matter involving the law. We aim to change that by providing a casual setting to have that legal conversation,” he said.

All questions and cases are welcome by the legal clinic team, from traffic fines to employment discrimination and everything in between.

University of Newcastle Law School Juris Doctor

Program: Juris Doctor/ Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice
Location: Newcastle, New South Wales
Duration: 3 years
Semester intakes: February and June each year
Application deadline: No set deadline; however, candidates are encouraged to apply at least three months prior to the program’s start date.

Newcastle Law School offers complimentary legal services

A free and unique legal service aimed at assisting those in need, while also providing University of Newcastle (UON) students with real-world experience, hit Newcastle Beach recently.

Now in its 14th year, Law on the Beach, run by UON’s Legal Centre, will hold drop-in consultations at Newcastle Beach Surf Club and the City Campus across January and February in order to increase access to legal services for people in need of guidance.

Newcastle Law School students in their penultimate year in law and social work, alongside experienced lawyers, donate their time and skills to assisting disadvantaged members of the public.

Daniel Richards, a fifth year Bachelor of Laws (Hons)/Diploma of Legal Practice student, will take time out of the university holidays to assist the program. The 22-year-old, who is originally from Muswellbrook, said he was keen to advance his skills while helping those in need.

“It’s one thing learning theory in the classroom, but it’s completely different applying what we’ve learnt to real-world cases. It’s an invaluable experience that makes a huge difference to both the students and the community.

“Newcastle Beach is such a great setting, as it creates a really relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is in shorts and t-shirts and the sessions are conversational rather than a formal meeting,” he said.

Director of the Newcastle Law School Legal Centre, Mr Shaun McCarthy, said the students involved were extremely competent and keen to develop their knowledge, whilst displaying understanding and sensitivity to the issues at hand.

“Law on the Beach provides a unique opportunity for the community to access advice and assistance with their legal needs, as well as providing our exceptional students with real-world experience.

“Legal services are often inaccessible and can be confronting for younger members of the community due to their cost. The fact this program is so successful after 14 years is an indication that the service is still a necessary one,” Mr McCarthy said.

Drop-in sessions will run until Feb. 21.

About Newcastle Law School

The Newcastle Law School‘s integrated professional program was the first in Australia where students could take the three components of professional legal training—theoretical learning, skills training and experiential learning—at the same time. The University of Newcastle Legal Centre is the centerpiece of this clinical program. Functioning as both a legal practice and a teaching facility, the centre provides an intensive clinical placement site for students. By working with the centre’s solicitors and dealing with real clients with actual legal problems, students gain skills and experience in the practice of law.

Through its first-class facilities, as well as its innovative, integrated approach to legal education, the Faculty of Business and Law ensures that graduates gain all the necessary theory, skills and experience for a career in legal practice.

The Newcastle Law School operates from two sites. The Law School office and most of the academic staff are located in the McMullin Building on the Callaghan campus of the University. The Law School office and the offices of academic staff are located in the northern end of the top floor of the McMullin Building. A computer laboratory and classroom/mock court room (The Harris Wheeler Court Room) are located on the floor directly below the Law School office.

The Newcastle Law School‘s Legal Centre operates in the heritage-listed University House located in the central business district of Newcastle. Facilities there include a comprehensive legal aid clinic, mock court room and lecture theatres.

Bachelor of Laws

The University of Newcastle Law School offers the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree which is undertaken as a three-year, full-time graduate program, for those who have already completed an undergraduate degree.

Students from the University of Newcastle Legal Centre offered beach-goers free legal advice as a part of the innovative Law on the Beach program. The drop-in clinic, held in mid-summer at the Newcastle Beach Surf Life Saving Club, particularly aims to target young people by taking the law to them.

Law on the Beach also provides a unique opportunity for law students to apply their studies to actual legal practice with real clients. Casually dressed students, supervised by the University of Newcastle‘s Legal Centre lawyers, provide advice on a range of matters from neighbourhood disputes to debt and family law issues.
