Macquarie dean awarded prestigious medal for gene research

Macquarie University’s Dean of the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Professor Simon Foote, was awarded the prestigious Julian Wells Medal, at the 34th annual Lorne Genome Conference, in Victoria.

The Medal is awarded annually to a scientist who has made an outstanding contribution to understanding the genome and to the development of this field. The award was established in recognition of the major contributions made by Julian Wells to the development of molecular biology in Australia.

Professor Foote is a scientific leader in genetics in Australia and has conducted research in genomics with some key discoveries including, the structure of the human Y chromosome, and leadership in the team that produced the physical map of the human genome.

The Macquarie University professor joins the ranks of the many highly regarded Australian scientists who have won this award.

Study Biological Sciences at Macquarie University

The Master of Biotechnology at Macquarie University gives students a core competency in advanced molecular biotechnology approaches, including molecular biology, protein biochemistry, proteomics and applied microbiology. In addition, this biological science degree offers you advanced skills in critical thinking, experimental design and writing for peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Macquarie University‘s Master of Biotechnology fives students a strong interdisciplinary and practical focus reflective of the needs of the marketplace, and
draws on expertise from the Departments of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences, Biological Sciences, Computing and Statistics. This biological science degree incorporates Macquarie University’s expertise in proteomics. There is also an option to undertake a biotechnology industry internship.

Entry requirements

  • Australian Bachelor of Science degree or recognized equivalent in relevant field with a substantial laboratory component
  • Minimum GPA of 2.70 (out of 4.00)
