Introducing OzTREKK’s newest partner, the University of Otago!

Introducing the University of Otago in beautiful and magical New Zealand! We are all are proud to announce our partnership with Otago as an incredible higher-education option for you!

Founded in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand’s oldest university and is still leading the way when it comes to world-class teaching and student lifestyle. The campus is situated in the centre of Dunedin, a city offering the best of both worlds to students!

Great news for everyone interested in studying dentistry

That means you can now apply to the University of Otago’s 5-year, undergraduate Bachelor of Dental Surgery program! This is a very exciting option for our post-grad students as you may be eligible to complete this program in 4 years. This is the first time we’ve been able to offer an accelerated, 4-year option for our students with a degree and without a DAT.

Because of Otago’s Health Sciences First Year program, we do not recommend students coming directly from high school apply to this program.

In addition to being an excellent educational option (Otago is one of the highest ranked dental programs in the world), students commencing next year will also be treated brand new facilities! The 2020 intake marks the inaugural year of the $130-million, 214-chair, dentistry building (the newest in the southern hemisphere—and perhaps the world)!

What does it take to get in?

1. A bachelor’s degree
You must have a completed bachelor’s degree with a minimum cGPA of 5.0 out of 7.0 (roughly 2.7/4, or 70% or B-) with the equivalent of all courses as required for the University of Otago‘s Health Sciences Year 1:

  • Foundations of Biochemistry
  • Cell and Molecular Biology
  • The Chemical Basis of Biology and Human Health
  • Human Body Systems I
  • Human Body Systems II
  • Biological Physics
  • Population Health

2. Complete the UCAT ANZ (University Clinical Aptitude Test)
Similar to other admissions tests, the UCAT ANZ is a 2-hour, computer-based test delivered in Pearson VUE test centres throughout Canada. Practice tests are available!

Verbal Reasoning – Ability to think logically about written information and arrive at a reasoned conclusion
Decision Making – Ability to apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion, evaluate arguments and analyze statistical information
Quantitative Reasoning – Ability to solve numerical problems
Abstract Reasoning – Ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking
Situational Judgement – Measures responses in situations and your grasp of medical ethics

Apply now to the University of Otago dentistry program!

Australian dental school application deadlines

Australian dental schools are very popular among Canadian students. Why? It’s because of the reciprocal agreement between Canada and Australia allowing international graduates of accredited dentistry programs from both countries to be considered the same as domestic graduates. Canadians who have graduated from an accredited Australian dentistry program are required to write the same National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) Written Examination and Objective Structured Clinical Examination as someone who graduated from a Canadian dentistry program before he or she would be licensed to practice.

Now on to the good part: the application deadlines. Remember, it’s always best to apply as early as possible since dentistry admissions can be very competitive! If you’ve already filled out an Australian dental schools application, now is the time to get the remaining app documents in!

About Australian dental schools

In Australia, there are two distinct pathways to studying dentistry, both of which lead you to become a dentist.

Graduate Entry: Some Australian dental schools offer a graduate-entry dental program. This pathway is exactly the same as in Canada, where you first have to complete an undergraduate degree, such as a Bachelor of Science, and then you apply to a four-year dental program.

Undergraduate Entry: Some Australian dental schools allow you to enter into a dental program directly from high school or with a partially completed undergraduate degree. These undergraduate degrees are typically five years.

Five of OzTREKK’s universities offer dental programs:

Griffith University Dental School
James Cook University Dental School
University of Melbourne Dental School
University of Queensland Dental School
University of Sydney Dental School

Get all the details on March 2 at the Australian Dental School Info Session!
