About Bond Physiotherapy Work Experience and Internships

Bond Physiotherapy students complete a clinical internship with an embedded research project in their final semester. This placement is designed to ensure graduates are ideally placed for entering the workforce. The first 30 weeks of clinical experiences will be gained in both hospital and community settings and will include working in the clinical areas of

  • orthopaedics;
  • cardiorespiratory;
  • out-patient musculoskeletal practice (hospital or private practice settings);
  • neurological and orthogeriatric rehabilitation (hospital and community settings); and
  • an elective in paediatrics, women’s/men’s health or sports practice.

Bond Law School offers free workshop for Canadian JD students

Study law at Bond University!

In order to help prepare their Canadian students for the NCA exam, Bond Law offers an extracurricular workshop each semester—Canadian Professional Responsibility.

The course includes online seminars, reading lists and sample fact scenarios that introduce students to issues of lawyers’ ethics and professional responsibility, and specifically ethical reasoning in legal practice in the Canadian context. Students cover selected topics including the Federation of Canadian Law Societies, Federation Model Code of Professional, case law arising from this material and to the application of the law of fiduciary obligations to lawyer-client relationships.

The course does not include assigned assessment, but is designed aid students in understanding Canadian Professional Responsibility and assist with preparations for the NCA exams.

Bond Law School also offers four Canadian Law subject. These courses can assist Canadian graduates in preparation for their NCA examinations in these areas:

  • Foundations of Canadian Law
  • Canadian Criminal Law
  • Canadian Constitutional Law
  • Canadian Administrative Law

The faculty also be packages their Canadian subjects as a “Graduate Certificate in Canadian Law” able to be taken by Canadian students, whether from Bond or elsewhere, to assist them in preparing for the NCA exams.

Bond University launches Australia-first Transformer program

Bond University has just launched an Australia-first co-curricular program aimed at instilling big-picture thinking in students across all faculties, after making a $2.5-million investment in the new offering, including a dedicated co-working space.

More than 90 students have already enrolled in the new Transformer program, the launch of which coincides with the university’s 28th anniversary. It is available year-round at no cost to students, and designed to develop creativity, encourage exploration, enable innovation and enhance the Gold Coast university’s trademark entrepreneurial experience, for which it’s been renowned for almost three decades.

The Transformer is being offered to all students and can be completed at their own pace in three distinct consecutive phases over the course of their undergraduate or postgraduate degree:

  1. Inspiration – where students will identify and define their concept, researching the core issues and existing solutions with a key emphasis on understanding potential users
  2. Exploration – where students will generate and trial a range of possible solutions to develop a practical methodology based on real-life feedback
  3. Transformation – where students will develop a detailed plan for implementation and secure the required resources

The program is being overseen by an independent Advisory Circle of industry heavyweights, including Queensland Chief Entrepreneur and Blue Sky Alternative Investments founder Mark Sowerby, Virgin Australia director David Baxby, ECP Asset Management co-founder and portfolio manager Jared Pohl and GoldBean founder and chief executive Jane Barratt. Mr Baxby, Mr Pohl and Ms Barratt are all alumni of Bond University.

Participation in the Transformer will earn students credit towards Bond University‘s mandatory Beyond Bond extracurricular program, which ensures all students graduate with on-the-job experience and skills. Through the program students will benefit from academic coaching, a regular “expert insights” Q&A series with leading industry figures and one-on-one mentoring, particularly from high-profile Bond University alumni.

The innovative space will provide a dedicated place for students of all disciplines to come together and access academics, industry experts, mentors, workshops, events and other resources.

Bond Business School Executive Dean Professor Terry O’Neill said Transformer would help students to identify problems and drive change.

“In today’s fast-paced business world, graduates need to have the skills to step into any job and hit the ground running, including positions that might not yet exist,” he said. “Students from different faculties will bring completely different problems or ideas to the table and will have their own unique approach to solving them.

“By putting them in the same room, we create opportunities where a student from health sciences, for example, might identify an issue in their industry that can be solved with the unique insight of someone from business or law.”

Transformer Hub

Bond University has created a new cutting-edge co-working space, situated in the Bond Business School, which will be the home of the Transformer. Opened in May 2017, Bond Business School’s new state-of-the-art facilities incorporate a dynamic co-working space, dedicated to the Transformer program. Designed around the concept of “accelerated serendipity,” it features a series of zones where chance encounters transform into productive discussions, brainstorming sessions and planning meetings.

Bond ranked in top 20 of world’s best small universities

Bond University has been listed in the prestigious global top 20 universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings of the “Best Small Universities” in the world, thanks to its personalised teaching philosophy and outstanding student experience, which translates to extraordinary student satisfaction ratings.

The private, not-for-profit Gold Coast university placed number 20 in the global ranking which acknowledges those universities with an unparalleled reputation for delivering personalised learning, developing close relationships between students and their teachers, and creating an environment that fosters a strong sense of community.

The Best Small Universities list is topped by the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) which is also ranked this year as the second best overall university in the world (behind Oxford). Bond University is the only university in the southern hemisphere to be included in the list in the global top 20.

Bond University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Tim Brailsford said the ranking was recognition of Bond’s never-ending and priority focus on the student and their learning experience, which set it apart from many other universities both in Australia and internationally.

Bond Business School student Alice Ringelstein said she chose to study at Bond because of its smaller size, which enabled her to spend more one-on-one time with her teachers and gain the most out of her experience.

Bond Law talks about professional admission to practice law in Canada

Many Canadians are deciding to study law at an Australian university. And why not? Many Australian law schools are among the top 50 in the world! But what comes after you’ve received your law degree?

To practice law in Canada, you will need to complete articles and a bar admission course. To be eligible for articles and a bar admission course in any of the common law provinces, a graduate of an Australian law program will need a Certificate of Qualification (CQ) from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. The NCA issues a CQ to international qualified applicants confirming that the applicant has an understanding and knowledge of Canadian law and knowledge equivalent to that of a graduate of a Canadian common law program.

Application for a CQ is made to the NCA at the end of your Bond Law degree. Once a Canadian law student receives a final graduation certificate and applies to the NCA, it currently takes about three months for the NCA to issue a CQ, or to advise which extra challenge exams the graduate must complete in Canada. In order for the NCA to issue the CQ, assessment criteria must be met.

Students are strongly encouraged consult the NCA website and conduct their own research to ensure they are aware of the requirements pertaining to their specific circumstances.

The NCA certifies that an applicant has

  • an understanding and knowledge of Canadian law, and
  • knowledge equivalent to that of a graduate of a Canadian common law program.

Equivalence to an approved Canadian common law, law degree serves as the benchmark when the NCA evaluates applicants with legal education or training in another country or in a Canadian civil law program. The NCA Certificate of Qualification does not, however, duplicate a Canadian law degree, which varies between law schools. NCA applicants may be asked to challenge examinations in subjects that all law schools may not require for a law degree.

Effective January 2015, the NCA introduced a new Assessment Policy. The new policy clarifies different aspects of the NCA Assessment process and brings the policy into compliance with the Federation’s National Requirement for Canadian Common Law Programs. Other NCA policies, including Assessment Appeal and deadlines for completing assigned requirements, are unchanged.

Digital hub adds a new dimension to student learning at Bond University

A new state-of-the-art Digital Media Hub was launched Jan. 24, 2017 at Bond University in the Balnaves Foundation Multimedia Learning Centre (MLC), providing unprecedented access to the latest multimedia technologies for students and staff.

The Digital Media Hub, which was co-funded by the Balnaves Foundation and Bond University Student Association (BUSA), will be used for academic-led classes, development of pod/vod casts, as well as independent learning by students out-of-hours.

It consists of three main zones:

  • The micro studio for content creation and production, featuring a green screen, HD remote controlled PTZ cameras, three-point production lighting, a teleprompter and monitors, Apple Mac, quality audio capture and playback facilities and virtual reality (VR) hardware.
  • Study lounge areas featuring individual or group-based learning spaces, USB charging stations, BYOD capability to support streaming platforms.
  • Individual digital media workstations with access to a range of software based digital media production, editing, 3D modelling and animation and CAD software plus 12 high-end PCs and Mac Pros.

Bond University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Tim Brailsford said the purpose-built facility had been created to meet the needs of both students and academics for an interactive, multimedia learning space.

“Along with the growing use of virtual reality teaching apps and technologies by academics in our classrooms, comes the need for all our students to access these technologies to study, learn and create in their own time,” Professor Brailsford said.

“For example, our Health Sciences and Medicine students are creating 3D models of organs and general anatomy; our Film and Television students are creating and editing films; our Architecture students are using CAD for modelling their designs; our Advertising and Journalism students are creating audio and video media for online distribution; and our Interactive Media students are creating mobile applications, software and games.

“Furthermore, our students and academics will be able to use the micro studio to edit podcasts and vodcasts, and deliver lectures and attend seminars anywhere in the world, at any time, via virtual reality and cloud-conferencing.

“We are very grateful to the Balnaves Foundation for their continued generosity and support. This extension to the Balnaves Foundation Multimedia Learning Centre will ensure Bond remains at the cutting-edge of educational technology and we continue to provide our students with world-class facilities.”

Balnaves Foundation General Manager Hamish Balnaves said the foundation was proud to be part of the continued evolution of the award-winning Multimedia Learning Centre.

“The Digital Media Hub will further enable Bond’s academics to deliver a combination of personal interaction and digital learning 24-7, and ensure its students are well equipped to enter the modern global workforce,” Mr Balnaves said.

The OzTREKK Community Leaders Scholarships were created to assist students who have demonstrated leadership, compassion, and innovation in their communities. What we didn’t realise is that so many of you are so incredible! The task of choosing the top three was extremely difficult, but this is how we did it:

Students were evaluated on their written letters and videos. It took approximately two months for our scholarship committee to review all applications. Many submissions had to be read/watched multiple times in order to absorb just how much some of the applicants had accomplished! In an office email, OzTREKK Director Jaime Notman commented that “there were a few jaw-dropping moments for me (where I read, re-read and re-read—again—to see if I was mistaken).”

The committee was truly blown away by the calibre of the applications! Such a of variety of community involvement, both on a local and a global scale, and there were certainly some applications that broke office silence—either with a laugh or a cheerful “wow!”

We also have to give a shout-out to the singers, the attempts at Aussie accents, and the didgeridoo players!

So what kind of community involvement did we see? A lot. Here are just a few examples:

  • CLOUD project, part of The NWC – Sustainable Travel for Impact and Community Development Projects in Dominican Republic, Haiti, Uganda, Kenya, Guyana
  • FITFAM – a health and fitness program to help encourage, educate and empower participants to live healthier lives, including weekly boot-camp class, nutrition challenges, health and wellness seminars, and sponsored 5K events.
  • Leader of a mobility fundraiser for wheelchairs delivered to Peru
  • Make Way For Me! Occupational Therapy for Children and Youth – Assisted in the creation, planning, and management as a Skill Development Summer Program, where program facilitators provided intensive services to address areas such as anxiety reduction, emotional regulation, social skills, printing development, and gross motor skills such as riding a bike.
  • President of the Caribbean Students Association – Raised awareness for the struggle of cultural integration, orchestrated events to raise money to donate to Haiti relief groups and donated backpacks to an elementary school in Saint Lucia.

The group evaluation was tough—the applications showed so much passion and purpose, we wanted to share the scholarship love with everyone! We watched many of the videos repeatedly, combed through written applications, and spent hours discussing and finally selecting the three winners.

It is difficult for the committee to express the appreciation we have for all of our applicants’ efforts. We understand many had likely taken weeks to plan and create their applications, and we want everyone to know we absorbed every detail.

Congratulations again, Barinder, Sharon, and Jannelle! OzTREKK is so proud of what you have accomplished thus far and we are excited to see the positive waves you’ll continue to make within your communities, even Down Under!

Former OzTREKK student practicing physiotherapy in Australia

Former OzTREKKer Kyle Mitchell’s pathway to physiotherapy started with a baseball scholarship to study at the New Mexico Military Institute in the US. He went on to study a Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia before relocating to Australia and enrolling in Bond’s Doctor of Physiotherapy.

While he originally planned to return home to practice in Canada, he’s created a new life for himself on the Gold Coast, working in private practice at Pindara Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine, and in the community as physiotherapist for Bond University’s AFL Club and the Major League Baseball Australian Academy Program. He has also travelled with the Australian National under 15 baseball team to the World Championships.

So what’s it like to study physio at Bond?

My favourite aspects of studying at Bond were the small classes, intensive learning and the large amount of practical clinical experience which made up more than 42 weeks of the course.

The faculty staff arranged a variety of placements so I was exposed to all areas of specialisation. This really broadened my perspective on the profession and I nearly switched my pathway from sports to paediatrics, which I would never have considered if it hadn’t been for a great placement that allowed me to see into that domain.

For me, the most satisfying part of being a physiotherapist is developing a plan and successfully implementing a program for patients who have struggled with an injury for an extended period. In some instances, you have quite literally changed the course of their life.

As a physiotherapist in a private practice, I see patients presenting with a wide variety of conditions, from post-operative orthopaedic issues through to vertigo, vestibular and musculoskeletal disorders. I also have a special interest in sports physiotherapy so I work with athletes and teams—mainly AFL and baseball.

On a typical day, I’ll see 10 to 15 patients. With new patients, I’ll do a clinical history and objective assessment so I can develop a treatment and rehabilitation plan. As treatment progresses, I monitor and support their progress while providing education about their condition.

A number of my patients come through the Department of Veteran Affairs and WorkCover. I’ve learned over time that my interactions have a significant impact on their progress so I spend a lot of time educating patients to help them understand their condition. What you say can be as important as the physical treatment.

I’ve also learned that having a business perspective is essential when you’re working in health. You need to understand the financial implications of your treatment, not only for yourself and the practice, but for patients whose financial situation may impact on their access to your service.

For me, the most satisfying part of being a physiotherapist is developing a plan and successfully implementing a program for patients who have struggled with an injury for an extended period. In some instances, you have quite literally changed the course of their life.

My final internship led to my current position working at Pindara Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine. The internship gave me the opportunity to develop a rapport with the team so that practical element of Bond’s physiotherapy program is invaluable in terms of finding employment. In fact, I have yet to meet a graduate who hasn’t been able to find a job in the field of their choice.

Want to get into Physiotherapy? My advice…

Find your passion and follow it. There are plenty of jobs available in private practice but you need to make sure that whatever you’re interested in will be encouraged or is already promoted at the clinic you choose. That way, you’ll always find the right job.

Also, know that people love to teach and educate others. Use that to become a better clinician by asking questions and seeking out further learning that will allow you to progress in your career!

Clare MacFarlane dreamed of working in sports physio when she enrolled in Bond University’s Doctor of Physiotherapy program.

A Bond University graduate's passion for paediatric physiotherapy

That was until she discovered a passion for paediatrics during the extensive clinical placements organised by the faculty throughout the program.

“This personalised approach continued right throughout the course. The faculty staff were amazing and took time to get to know all of us. I really admired the way they helped us discover our individual learning styles, which not only helped me as a student but is an approach I’ve embraced in my therapy practice.”

A few years after graduating, Clare secured a part-time role as a specialist paediatric physiotherapist in private practice and, at the same time, established her own mobile paediatric physiotherapy clinic on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

“It demands a lot of clinical experience, coupled with exposure to many types of disabilities and appropriate therapy management.”

In 2015, Clare was headhunted by the CEO of world-renowned US-based Neurological and Physical Abilitation Centre to serve as Director of Rehabilitation for NAPA Centre in Sydney.

“As Director, I am responsible for the overall management of the clinic. This includes supervising a range of other therapists—physios, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists—and devising therapy plans for our patients.”

Clare is also soon to complete her PhD at Bond University.
