UQ glows red for MS Awareness Month

The University of Queensland is joining the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS) by bathing the Forgan Smith Building in red for the “Kiss Goodbye to MS” campaign in May.

Find out more about studying medicine at UQ

Forgan Smith Building at the University of Queensland

The middle section of the northern side of the building will be floodlit from 6 to 11 p.m. every night for the duration of MS Awareness Month, as part of the effort to raise awareness of the debilitating disease.

Multiple sclerosis attacks the brain and spinal cord, causing irreparable damage and is the most common acquired chronic neurological condition among young Australian adults.

Researchers at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), the School of Medicine, and the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) are working to find treatments to help the 23,000 Australians living with the disease.

UQ MS expert Dr Judith Greer said the UQCCR was working on five main MS projects. “My current work focuses on the role of molecules called antibodies,” she said. “There is a lot of suggestive evidence that these antibodies might cause a faster progression of disease in people with multiple sclerosis, but this remains to be proven.

“We’re investigating the mechanisms by which antibodies that target the most abundant protein in myelin (called proteolipid protein or PLP) could hasten MS disease progression,” Dr Greer said. “MS Queensland is a great supporter of ours and sponsors many of our projects.”

Other areas under the microscope include the development of antigen-specific therapeutics agents for MS, the role of pregnancy in protecting against MS, the role of mutations in genes that control the pro-inflammatory NF-kB pathway for people with MS, and the role of Epstein Barr virus in MS.

Researchers hope the results of these studies will help improve treatment options for people with MS and allow better understanding of the basic pathogenic mechanisms that can cause MS.

UQ Property and Facilities Division Maintenance Manager Contracts Glenn Vickery said UQ participated in the annual event to raise awareness among staff, visitors and students.

“Other major sites joining us this year are Conrad Treasury Casino, Kurilpa Bridge, QPAC and the Queensland Museum,” he said.

MS Queensland urges the public to get involved with the Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign and support Australian research into treatment, prevention and ultimately finding a cure for MS.

UQ-Ochsner medical program graduates achieve 100% residency match

The University of Queensland’s Ochsner medical program has reached a major milestone with its first graduates all placed in United States clinical residency positions.

Learn more about UQ Medical School

Attending the Match Day celebration are, from left, Deputy Head of School Dr Richard Deichmann and Head of School Dr William Pinsky with graduates Dr Steven Sushinsky, Dr Emily Sineway, and Dr Katherine Weyer, and Deputy Head of School Dr Leonardo Seoane.

Medical graduates across the United States, including the nine UQ-Ochsner graduates, have been advised of their residency places.

Seven of the nine UQ-Ochsner graduates have been placed in one of their top three preferences to continue specialty training to become fully licensed physicians in the US.

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Dr Anna Ciccarelli said it was a vital landmark for the first UQ-Ochsner students, and was the culmination of significant efforts by many people across the school.

The US residency matching program uses the preferences submitted by applicants and programs to place new medical graduates into residency positions in the United States.

Four of the graduates have matched at the Ochsner Health System itself, with the remaining five matched in programs at Emory University, Wayne State University, University of Hawaii, University of Denver, and Eastern Virginia Medical School.

UQ-Ochsner Clinical School Head Professor William Pinsky said he was pleased with the success of the “pioneer class.”

“This truly validates their choice to enter our program as well as validating our strategy in opening the school,” said Professor Pinsky, who is also Ochsner Health System’s executive vice-president and chief academic officer.

The graduates will specialize in a range of disciplines from pathology to internal medicine, general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology, and will begin their residencies in July 2013.

The Ochsner Undergraduate Medical Education staff held a reception for the graduates to celebrate Match Day.

About the UQ-Ochsner Program

In 2008, UQ’s School of Medicine established a partnership with the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, United States. The Ochsner Clinical School was established, and acceptance of US students to complete medical degrees in Australia and the United States began.

Each year, UQ attracts medical students who are US citizens or US permanent residents for the UQ-Ochsner program. This program is a four-year Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBBS), with the first two years (pre-clinical) spent at UQ‘s Queensland campuses (St Lucia or Ipswich) and the final two years (clinical) spent at UQ’s Ochsner Clinical School (New Orleans).

In 2010, UQ’s School of Medicine gained Australian Medical Council accreditation for the unique partnership with the Ochsner Health System, emphasizing the school’s status as Australia’s Global Medical School.

The UQ-Ochsner program continues to grow, with 64 students now at the Ochsner Clinical School (34 fourth-year and 30 third-year students) and 188 students in Brisbane (84 second-year and 104 first-year students).

UQ Medical School orientation with OzTREKK

The UQ Medical School commences its program much earlier than any other Australian medical school. In fact, from Jan. 3 – Jan 14, 2013, OzTREKK co-founders and directors Beth McNally and Matt Miernik were ready to meet the new students—right there on Aussie soil!

Because the largest number of Canadians studying medicine in Australia study at the UQ Medical School, the OzTREKK Orientation at UQ runs for more than a week. This gives the new UQ medical students extra time to adjust to their new surroundings and prepare for the incredible life journey ahead.

The UQ Medical School Orientation began with a delicious lunch at Bangkok Delight, a local Thai restaurant that’s just a short walk from the picturesque St Lucia campus. All the new incoming Canadian medical students where welcomed by 32ºC weather and beautiful bright blue skies. Quite the acclimatization from negative temperatures in Canada!

Just prior to the OzTREKK Welcome Lunch, UQ hosted its mandatory Getting Started session, “International Student Orientation and Official Welcome,” along with an accommodation seminar for those still looking for accommodation. The Getting Started session outlines everything you need to know about UQ and offers ideas for things to do and see around Brisbane. Topics include visa compliance, overseas health coverage, studying at UQ, and living in Australia.

Once the OzTREKK lunch was completed it was time to start the OzTREKK Shuttle. Matt and Beth introduced the OzTREKK Shuttle a few years ago to help new students organize and establish themselves before classes begin. The OzTREKK Shuttle is always popular, with countless trips to IKEA, local grocery stores and shopping malls, Officeworks to get printers, computers and stationery, and for just touring around beautiful Brisbane and the Brisbane River.

We were also able to get in a sneaky trip down to the Gold Coast for a number of the lucky students, just to take a bit of a break and breather prior to the commencement of their studies.

Wish you were here!
