OzTREKK’s Matt Miernik Catches Stanley Cup Final Game!

OzTREKK‘s Matt Miernik had a first-hand encounter with Vancouver’s excitement over their team vying for the coveted trophy, the Stanley Cup.

Matt was in Vancouver for work during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final, and even before the puck dropped, he said the entire city was pumped for their hometown team.

“Vancouver was electric in the days leading up to Game 1. On game day, many Vancouverites donned their favourite Canucks jersey and left work early to get a great table or vantage spot to catch the game,” he said.

On game night, Matt and his Australian university colleagues had to check it out for themselves.

They headed to the second most popular spot in the city, Granville Street, second in popularity to the Canucks’ home ice at the Rogers Arena. Thousands of fans filled the street to watch the game outside.

Matt has one way to best describe Granville Street that night.

Melbourne Medical School Hosts Inaugural MD Student Conference

The Melbourne Medical School will bring together students, medical colleagues and health professionals later this month for the inaugural MD Conference.

For the first time, the Melbourne Medical School will host a four-day conference for students, giving them the opportunity to not only network with future colleagues, but to understand and discuss the selected conference theme.

This year’s conference theme is Indigenous Health and Interprofessionalism, and will include a keynote speaker, presentations focusing on these themes, a small group case study and the inter-university HealthFusion Team Challenge. The winning team will then head to the HealthFusion Challenge set for this August in Brisbane.

The conference takes place from June 28-July 1, and is an actual curriculum component to the Melbourne Medical School.
As its first year offering the Melbourne Doctor of Medicine program, OzTREKK applauds the University of Melbourne for taking the initiative to provide plenty of opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom and network with current health professionals.

University of Melbourne Researchers a Step Closer to HIV Vaccine

University of Melbourne researchers say they are a step closer to a vaccine for HIV and hope to be able to offer a preventative jab within the decade.

Experts at The University of Melbourne have found that people with HIV produce antibodies which trigger the immune system to find and attack the virus. The antibodies force the HIV virus to change, making it weaker.Professor Stephen Kent says if a vaccine could produce the antibodies so they would work before infection, then that would be likely to prevent infection altogether.

“Because the antibodies don’t develop until after they catch HIV, the antibodies can’t actually cure the HIV once it’s already there,” he said.

“The thing about antibodies is, if you can induce them before you acquire infection, it’s likely to prevent infection altogether.“If a vaccine was to make these antibodies it could prevent the virus altogether.”

Work on such a vaccine is underwayAbout 30 million people around the world are affected by HIV, including 20,000 Australians, and the number is on the rise.

Melbourne Medical School Students’ Society’s T-shirt Design Competition

The Melbourne Medical School Students’ Society t-shirt design competition has become an annual tradition!

The students’ society currently has a competition on where they want their members to submit their ideas and creativity for its annual t-shirt design.

There’s no doubt that Australian Medical Schools are world-renowned programs well respected for its program content, clinical experience and research facilities.

But OzTREKK also likes that there is a social component to the Australian Medical Schools lifestyle, too! The Melbourne Medical School Students’ Society has an active partnership and they consistently host galas, trivia nights and fundraisers.

Check out last year’s Melbourne Medical School winning design:

The tips for submitting an idea is that it has to be a digital concept, and the design has to be compatible with being printed in a variety of colours. And, of course, make it memorable!

OzTREKK staff were talking about the t-shirts they have held on to since their university days. For some of us, years later, we still hang on to any t-shirts we acquired from our university days. Maybe we’re just holding on to the past, but we see it as a way to remember all the good times shared during those great years. We know that the Melbourne Medical School Students’ Society feels the same way. The t-shirt design competition closes this month and we can’t wait to see this year’s winning design!
