Macquarie University Track Star Training for 2012 Olympic Debut

Joel Milburn

Imagine studying to complete your university undergraduate degree while also working toward your Olympic Debut? That’s a day in the life of Macquarie University student Joel Milburn.

Macquarie University recently named him the 2010 Male Athlete of the Year, and for good reason.

Milburn, who will soon complete his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, is one of the nation’s fastest males over 400 metres. In 2010, he took to the start line frequently as part of the Australian Athletics Tour. In March, he was crowned the NSW 400m champion.

Milburn’s accomplishments on the track included a 3rd place in the 88th Australian Athletics Championships in April 2010. He was then selected for Australia’s Commonweath Games team. At the Shizuoka International meet in Japan, he placed 5th with a time of 46.82. That is so fast! It’s only three seconds slower than USA’s LaShawn Merritt’s 2008 Olympic 400-metre time, which earned him the gold medal.

Same Name, Different Country!

OzTREKK  Explores Canadian and Australian Shared City Names

The OzTREKK home base is located in Perth, Ontario. Many times, when we tell students we are based in Perth, they assume we are located in Perth, Australia. It is a funny coincidence and to honour our shared namesake with the western-Australian city, we have highlighted some other famous Australian cities that share the same name with Canadian locations, uncovering how they got their names. With British backgrounds, it’s no surprise the names come from the same person, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Perth, Ontario

Perth, Ontario
The town was established as a military settlement in 1816, shortly after the War of 1812. Many of the first settlers were military veterans on half pay, while others were military veterans from France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Scotland or Ireland who were offered land in return for their service. A wave of Scottish and Irish immigrants quickly followed. Many of the Scottish immigrants were stonemasons; their work can be seen in many area buildings and in the locks of the Rideau Canal. The town was named after Perth, Scotland, which just celebrated its 800th anniversary.

Perth, Western Australia
Perth is the capitPerth, Australiaal and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia and the fourth most populous city in Australia. The Perth metropolitan area has an estimated population of 1,659,000.

Shortly after the establishment of the port settlement of Fremantle, Perth was founded on 12 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the political centre of the free-settler Swan River Colony. As the business and administration centre for the resource rich state, Perth has grown consistently faster than the national average.

The only contemporary information on the source of the name comes from Fremantle’s diary entry for 12 August, which records that they “named the town Perth according to the wishes of Sir George Murray”. Murray was born in Perth, Scotland, and was in 1829 Secretary of State for the Colonies and Member for Perthshire in the British House of Commons. It is therefore often asserted that the town was named after the Scottish Perth, in Murray’s honour.

Michael Buble has Crazy Love for Australians

Michael Buble
Canada’s Sinatra will woo his Australian fans and help them out at the same time.

Singer Michael Buble has pledged financial support for victims of Australia’s recent natural disasters and is to meet Queensland Premier Anna Bligh to discuss ways he can help.

The Canadian superstar hosted a press conference in Sydney this week to announce an undisclosed donation before challenging other international artists to do the same.

Arriving in Australia for his sold-out national tour, Buble described victims of last month’s flooding as “amazingly resilient” and according to the Sydney Morning Herald, announced plans to meet Bligh ahead of his opening show in Brisbane on Friday.

“I want to get her opinion and ask her the best way I can help,” Buble told journalists in Sydney today.

“For me it would be a nice thing if I could challenge other artists who have been given so much by this country to give back.

“It’s amazing what you guys have gone through.”

Buble revealed he sat stunned with his Tasmanian-born assistant as the first pictures of the Queensland floods were broadcast in Toronto.

He immediately called his Australian tour manager Paul Dainty to ask how best he could help.

“I’ve got people I consider family and friends here and you guys have given me a lot, so it was heartbreaking to see it happening.”

Whether or not you like his music, OzTREKK gives him credit for identifying a need within a country that has supported him throughout his career. In fact, one-tenth of his sales are in Australia.

Good on ya, Buble!

Macquarie University Chiropractic School Obtains Public Feedback

New nationwide chiropractic survey helps to meet public needs

Macquarie University

Macquarie University‘s Department of Chiropractic Workforce Research team is conducting a survey across Australia to ascertain how the public is currently being served by chiropractic,
what kind of services are being used and what, if any alterations are needed in order to better meet the needs of the community.

They are asking the public to assist by filling out an online survey and expressing their views on the chiropractic services available in their local area. Grant funding for this project was provided by the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia-National, and by Macquarie University.

The results of the study will not only inform the industry as a whole regarding the public’s attitudes and expectations about chiropractic, but will also help to add to the knowledge base on current trends in chiropractic supply and demand.

Macquarie University Students Shake World Record

Talk about making a deal! Macquarie University students Jack Tsonis and Lindsay Morrison embarked on a 12 hour, 34 minute and 56 second-long journey that raised more than $10,000 and at the same time, broke a world record.

They shook hands.

The two students wanted to break the World’s Longest Handshake, and they did so on Sept. 21 at the ABC Studios. They began the session in the morning of International Day of Peace, and they broke the record by nearly an hour! They plan to split the charitable earnings between the Wayside Chapel and the Australian arm of the United Nations Refugee Agency.

Check out this video, which highlights their world record-breaking moment!

Top 10 Things to do in Sydney

Most of our OzTREKKERs will first land in Sydney when arriving to Australia for school. Or, they’ll be living as a Sydneysider, attending Macquarie University.

OzTREKK students often use this opportunity to explore the city, whose iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge are often the catalysts that lure tourists to the world-famous city.

But blogger Chris Pirillo offers a mixed template in his Top 10 Things to do in Sydney List. Of course the Sydney Opera House makes the list, but he also includes some insight into visiting The Rocks and St. Mary’s Cathedral. It’s a worthwhile list to print off and pack in your suitcase, especially if you wish to explore the city before you take off to your university destination Down Under.

Check out the list on his blog:
