James Cook University Professor Named to National Committee

James Cook University’s Professor Helene Marsh has been appointed chair of the national Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC).

The TSSC, established by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, advises Federal Environment Minister Tony Bourke on amendments to the national lists for threatened species, threatened ecological communities, and key threatening processes.

Together with conservation advice, it advises the Minister and government on the development and adoption of recovery plans and threat abatement plans.

Professor Marsh, an internationally recognised conservation and environmental scientist, is currently Dean of Graduate Research Studies and Professor of Environmental Science at James Cook University. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Professor Marsh has extensive experience in conservation biology with a particular focus on establishing a sound ecological basis for the management of marine and terrestrial environments in tropical Australia and has won several international awards for her research and conservation activities.

Professor Marsh said she was surprised when the government approached her, saying the Minister would like to talk to her about the role, which is nation-wide.

She said she was looking forward to working co-operatively with states and communities to develop a sense of ownership about conservation problems.

Fostering relationships between the TSSC and the Environment Department’s Indigenous Advisory Committee will be a priority in order to strengthen the role of Indigenous landholders in biodiversity conservation, she said.

“I consider biodiversity conservation to be a vital source of jobs for Indigenous people in remote regions of Australia,” she said

“We need to reduce the feeling that it is peoples’ lifestyles that are threatened. Good conservation outcomes should be everyone’s business.”

James Cook University Pharmacy School Student Shares Cyclone Experience

James Cook University Pharmacy School Student Jeremy Warner experienced something for the first time as a Canadian studying in Australia – a category-five storm.

In February, 2011, Townsville, Queensland was hit by a cyclone, causing damage to a number of buildings and the natural landscape. Winds hit 260 km/hour and flooding brought the city residents to work together for one another’s safety and well-being.

Coming from Canada where he hasn’t experienced these weather conditions, Warner said he learned a lot about proper response to a cyclone, remaining in the safety of his home.

“My apartment was without power for just under two days, which wasn’t that bad compared to others who were without power for over a week,” he explains. “So I spent lots of time reading and relaxing with my roommate and other friends.”

He said as soon as residents learned danger was lurking with the cyclone, grocery stores shelves were quickly cleaned out, and residents headed for safety.

Australian Pharmacy Schools – Program of the Month

Australian Pharmacy Schools are gaining popularity in the Health Sciences fields of study, and for good reason. Pharmacists are key members in the health care team, because of their specialized knowledge in the use and application of medications and also in their communications with patients. They are in a great position to provide valuable information on the formulation of dosage forms and this relates to drug product efficacy. Pharmacists are also able to provide patients with information on the appropriate storage of medications.

Their understanding of the functioning of the body systems and the impact of disease on these systems, allows them to provide insight into Disease State Management. Accessibility often makes pharmacists the first members of the health care team contacted by patients and thus are important primary health care providers. In this role they are able to provide advice to patients on their health in both community and hospital pharmacy.

The following OzTREKK Australian University Partners offer a pharmacy program:

-James Cook University Pharmacy School
-Monash University Pharmacy School
-University of Queensland Pharmacy School
-University of Newcastle Pharmacy School

Student Profile

Name: Teresa Kim,
OzTREKK student

Program: University of Queensland Bachelor of Pharmacy

How do you like the Queensland Pharmacy School?

The Queensland Pharmacy program seems to be organized, and they are putting students on placements in community pharmacies in the second semester for good learning experience. Other than the workload that piles up toward the final examinations in June, everything else is going well.

What would you tell other Canadians about your program?

I would recommend this program as well as the University of Queensland. UQ Pharmacy is one of the most reputable programs worldwide, and I think studying internationally provides you with good experiences. Also, because Australia is an English-speaking country, there is no language or cultural barrier.

What do you like best about living in Australia?
The weather! The weather is beautiful here in Australia.
Compared to long winters and lots of snow in Canada, Australia is always sunny with blue skies with temperatures of around 20 degrees. It’s awesome.
