OzTREKK’s Four for Friday

This is the last Friday for February 2012 and we’re excited to greet March with open arms! Why? Because of the OzTREKK Study in Australia Fairs, of course! What’d you think we were going to say? To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Well, that’s the second reason. With that, let’s give four cheers to Four for Friday.

OzTREKK Study in Australia Fairs. With our opening, it’s obvious we’re going to get into the OzTREKK Study in Australia Fairs. So how do they work? Well, we bring reps from our Australian university partners to your Canadian campus. You then have a couple of hours to talk with each university rep about your program options. Meanwhile, OzTREKK staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about applying to school and living in Australia. Visit our OzTREKK Study in Australia Fairs page for more great info.

A Dingo Ate My Baby: Part Four. The famous 1980 story of an Australian mother insisting a dingo took her baby daughter out of their tent while camping, will see a fourth inquest into the matter. Lindy Chamberlain was initially charged with first-degree murder of her baby daughter. She insisted a dingo ran off with her baby, and evidence over the years has more fingers pointing in the dingo’s direction. A fourth inquest has recently launched, with further evidence indicating that dingoes have been responsible for children’s deaths in past years.

Australian Medical Schools Applications Now Open. Don’t forget that just last week, applications opened for Australian Medical Schools. Matt in Australia. OzTREKK Director Matt Miernik is having a terrific time hosting OzTREKK orientation sessions for our students this month. He’s travelled to Townsville, Cairns, Brisbane and Melbourne, helping our Canadian students get settled in their new surroundings. Matt’s been answering questions ranging from best cell phone plans to best place to get a coffee (Melbourne’s coffee culture is ah.maz.ing). The worst part is that when he returns home to Canada this weekend, he’ll be greeted with a fresh batch of snow, as weather reports in Ottawa are calling for 20 centimetres. Umm…welcome back, Matt?

Program of the Month: Australian Medical Schools

Australian Medical Schools listed as this month’s OzTREKK Program of the Month

Is there a doctor in the room?! You could be on your way to responding to that call if you decide to complete your medical degree at one of OzTREKK‘s Australian university partners’ Australian Medical Schools.

OzTREKK has developed close working relationships with our Australian university partners’ medical schools. We are in constant contact with its staff, ensuring we have all the necessary information to provide to Canadians interested in pursuing a medical degree in Australia. Not only will OzTREKK guide you through the application and acceptance stages, but we also provide seminars on completing a residency or internship in Canada and Australia. Here’s an overview of the graduate-entry Australian Medical Schools programs offered by our Australian university partners.

James Cook University Medical School
Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): 6 years

The James Cook University Medical School MBBS degree produces graduates who will be uniquely qualified in the fields of rural, remote and Indigenous health, and tropical medicine. The James Cook University Medical School combines integrated instruction in biomedical sciences, professional practice and clinical medicine, and incorporates the best aspects of student-centred, problem-based learning combined with systematic instruction. Clinical experience, particularly in the rural and remote context, commences at an early stage and science remains integrated across later years. Small-group learning and close relationships with academic staff and clinical preceptors are program features. The program is six years because students can begin the program directly from high school.

Monash University Medical School
Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): 4 years

The medical curriculum provides an interdisciplinary program, organized to provide integration of structure and function within the biomedical sciences. It presents a continually expanding level of medical experience, starting in the first semester of the course. In the first year, the basic medical sciences are taught in the context of their relevance to patient care. Later in the course, clinical teaching builds upon and reinforces this strong scientific foundation.

An emphasis on clinical communication skills as well as early clinical contact visits to medical practices, community care facilities and hospitals is a feature of the four-year, graduate-entry Monash University Medical School degree. All students will spend the majority of their time in rural and regional areas in eastern Victoria as part of a health-care team.

University of Melbourne Medical School
Doctor of Medicine (MD): 4 years

The University of Melbourne Medical School now offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, the first of its kind in Australia and the world. It is slightly different from the MD presently offered throughout North America as it has a higher designation.

The University of Melbourne Medical School MD is a four-year, graduate-entry medical program that builds on the University of Melbourne’s reputation for excellence in teaching and research. It enables students to become outstanding medical practitioners who will excel as world-class leaders in their chosen field.

University of Queensland Medical School
Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): 4 Years

Designed to produce doctors able to meet the challenges of the new century, the curriculum captures the enthusiasm and maturity of its graduate entrants and helps them develop into highly skilled medical graduates capable of entering the wide variety of career options open to them. The University of Queensland Medical School emphasizes problem-based learning (PBL) in a clinical context and encourages learning exercises in big and small groups. This program is popular for Canadians, and OzTREKK has developed a close working relationship with the School of Medicine staff.

University of Sydney Medical School
Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): 4 Years

The four-year program includes weekly clinical experience in leading hospitals from the very first weeks, regular problem-based learning exercises in small groups, traditional lectures with expert practitioners, and ongoing opportunities to participate in research.

There are also compulsory independent learning activities (with numerous international opportunities), an eight-week rural rotation and pre-internship training, including preparation for North American registration, if you intend to practise in the USA or Canada.

Listen Up! Student Testimonial

“There’s no doubt we are getting the top people teaching us, especially when it comes to clinical education. It’s good,
quality education.”

-OzTREKK Student, Jonathan De Silva, University of Queensland Medical School, MBBS

Career Counsellor

“What is the difference between the MBBS and MD degree?”

In Canada and the U.S., the MBBS degree is not offered. Instead, the first professional medical degree is known as the Doctor of Medicine (MD). But before you get your medical degree, you’d need to complete an udergraduate degree.

In Australia and United Kingdom, the MD is an advanced academic degree in the field of medical science very similar to a doctorate or a PhD (with the except of Melbourne). In Australia, you can complete the MBBS degree from high school and the degree denotes the kind of training that you’d need to be approved as a licenced physician.

James Cook University Medical School Develops Physician Assistant Program

James Cook University Medical School has developed a Physician Assistant program, giving a helping hand to doctors.

Beginning this January 2012, the James Cook University Medical School will offer the Bachelor of Health Science (Physician Assistant).

Physician assistants (PAs) are qualified to practise medicine under the supervision of a doctor or physician specialist.

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine recently endorsed a policy statement giving strong support to the potential of PAs, saying they “extend the reach of doctors in rural and remote communities and stabilize health care services”.

The three-year James Cook University Medical School Bachelor Degree course is designed for mature, medical or non-medical professionals with previous healthcare experience and a certain level of tertiary level education.

Allan Forde, Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the James Cook University Medical School, said PAs could undertake duties previously only performed by doctors or physicians, including examination, diagnosis, and carrying out investigations, as well as treatment and prescribing.

“However, all physician assistants must be associated with a supervising doctor or physician,” he said. “Physician Assistants are trained in a medical model to practice medicine under the supervision of a doctor or physician. PA students do not need to be nurses, but some are.”

The PA profession first emerged in the United States, with more than 80,000 PAs practising today.

It’s a model now spreading throughout the world, including Canada.

The Physician Assistant position is a growing career trend in Canada, with McMaster University, the University of Toronto, the University of Manitoba and the Canadian Forces offering a Physician Assistant program. It is CMA accredited in Ontario and Manitoba.

In fact, Canada’s National Physician Assistant Day was just celebrated on Nov. 15!

“Australia shares key features with Canada in particular, in regards to healthcare governance, overburdened public health sectors, substantial rural geography and significant Indigenous populations,” said Mr. Forde. “The PA prototype could help rural, remote and Indigenous health care in particular, and that’s what we are focused on at JCU.”

Fostering a Team-Based Health Care Approach

Nanette Laufik, a US-trained physician assistant and James Cook University Medical School academic staff member in Cairns, was already working clinically with the Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre in Mareeba.

Professor Richard Murray, Dean and Head of James Cook University Medical School, said rural and remote medicine had a strong tradition of team-based health care.

“This includes flexible delegation of clinical tasks by rural doctors to nurses, Aboriginal health workers, allied health practitioners, paramedics, lay health care assistants and others,” he said. “This is a practical adaptation to workforce shortage and geography and has helped to ensure that the evolving abilities of all members of a health care team can be fully applied.”

James Cook University Medical School Student Janis Sauvé Shares Her Story

James Cook University Medical School Student Janis Sauvé Shares her Experiences at the Australian Medical School!

When Janis Sauvé had an interview with the James Cook University Medical School, she wasn’t expecting an immediate application outcome. But that’s exactly what happened.

Upon speaking with JCU’s Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences’ Pro-Vice Chancellor, Ian Wronski, Janis made such a good impression, he offered her a program place on the spot.

“I was ecstatic,” she explains.

Completing a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo in Ontario followed by a Master of Science degree (majoring in Kinesiology, specializing in Orthopaedics), Janis says she’s always known she’s wanted to become a physician.

So when she got the on-the-spot offer from JCU, she knew her life was about to change.

Now a second-year James Cook University Medical School student, OzTREKK recently caught up with her to see how she’s enjoying life on campus and in Australia, as well as learn about her future goals as a physician.

Studying medicine in Australia became a reality for Janis when she decided to expand her medical school applications overseas.

“I read that schools within the Commonwealth recognize degrees from university institutions, and I applied to two universities in Queensland. I received two successful offers, and chose JCU,” she explains.

She says she went with the James Cook University Medical School for a number of reasons.

“The rural and remote health approach to medicine, the smaller city size, and well-respected university across Australia were all impressive qualities I was looking for in a medical institution,” she explains. “I also have family that live on the Gold Coast, and have a few friends who were already in Townsville, who highly recommended JCU’s medical program.”

Janis first arrived at the JCU campus in January 2010. Now a campus veteran, she raves about her JCU experiences thus far, and has embraced the demanding medical school student lifestyle.

“The medical program, though quite rigorous and intensive, offers incredible professors and instructors,” she says. “The James Cook University Medical School also uses technology to help students understand the undermining quality of rural and remote health.”

Rural and remote health interests Janis, making JCU a perfect fit, as James Cook University Medical School students become well versed in the rural and remote health field.

“I really respect how health professionals in rural settings have to do it all,” she says. “They sometimes have to be the nurse, the doctor, the psychologist, even the secretary. People that tend to work in rural settings generally are good people with good hearts. I really admire that.”

While studying at an Australian Medical School, many Canadian students return home to complete clinical placements. Getting the experience on home soil not only gives these students medical skill practice opportunities, they also make good connections within the Canadian medical system – an advantageous element should they decide to apply for a Canadian residency position following graduation.

Janis did just that, recently returning to Canada to complete a four-week general surgery medical placement in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

She says the team she worked with made for excellent teachers and her placement made her appreciate surgeons’ demands and responsibilities.

“From middle-of-the-night phone calls to return to the hospital, to daily rounds with patients, I learned and experienced much more than I ever anticipated,” she says, adding it gave her a taste of her chosen career path.

As for her next steps following her time at the James Cook University Medical School, Janis will keep her options open.

“I look forward to experiencing other medical professions in the next couple of years, before I make my decision on what areas I would like to focus on. I also have an interest in geriatric medicine and family practice,” she says.

When it comes to where she’d like to practise medicine, she says her homeland is calling her name.

“Though Australia has many advantages to living here – the warm weather, the kind people, the sporting events – I believe I would like to apply for a residency in Canada. I am quite close with my family, and am looking forward to spending more time with them.”
