Prepare for the MCAT

Students preparing for medical school know they will probably have to write the MCAT, but sometimes the hard part is organizing themselves to study for this test. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee’s problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of science concepts and principles is an important prerequisite for medical schools in North America and Australia. Scores are reported in Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and Biological Sciences. Preparation for such an important test is crucial for success.

Prepare for the MCAT

Prepare for the MCAT

How do you prepare for the MCAT?

It is recommended that you give yourself a minimum of at least three months for preparation:

  1. Prepare yourself by creating a step-by-step study plan. Make a promise to yourself that you’ll follow it meticulously. Figure out what you’ll need to review, what materials you’ll require, what kinds of practice tests you’ll need to take and whether you’ll need any remedial assistance.
  2. Do a “Google” search for MCAT preparation. Consider purchasing The Official Guide to the MCAT® Exam, 3rd Edition, available on the official MCAT website. Beware of some MCAT prep books and courses. Often, these courses are touted as the best, but often only provide exam-taking tips and not the important content.
  3. Relearn your undergraduate math, physics, biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry coursework. Then do it again. You’ll quickly identify some of your strengths and weaknesses in the process. Systematically reviewing the content of your class notes and introductory textbooks is a great start. Having the basic knowledge introduced in your undergraduate science and biology courses is the best foundation. Consider studying for the MCAT as your “other” full-time job. This is a big deal!
  4. Take the practice tests. The MCAT website also offers a free online practice test, with unlimited usage. This test offers real MCAT items from previously administered exams and all the features of the other practice tests. Taking an e-MCAT Practice Test helps you get comfortable with the MCAT format so you feel more prepared come test day. You can take a free test under timed conditions to get a baseline score giving you an idea of how you might score if you took the test today. Go through every practice test and identify the questions that you got wrong and analyze why you didn’t know the right answer. This can point out your weakest subjects.
  5. Prepare yourself physically and mentally. All-nighters and junk-food diets do little to help the body prepare. Make sure you continue “normal life” activities, including aerobic exercise and proper nutrition.
  6. Consider studying with others. A small study group can often produce better results than a solo effort.
  7. Ask someone. Whether they’ve taken the MCAT or a comparable standardized test, you can reach out for advice on what to expect.  A face-to-face exchange of ideas with an experienced professor, doctor, or friend presents an excellent learning opportunity.
  8. Be prepared for test day. When does the test start? Where is the test located? How do you get there? What materials should you bring? Make sure to consider these questions well before the test day. Whether it’s driving to the test location or picking out your clothes, simplify every step of the process that could potentially cause a stressful distraction.

What is an e-MCAT Practice Test like?

It’s just like the actual exam. Every e-MCAT Practice Test is a previously administered exam and consists of the same number of items as the actual exam.

The only thing different about the 2013 and 2014 e-MCAT Practice Test is that they will not have a Writing Sample section. The 2013 examinees will not take the Writing Sample section of the MCAT exam. The Writing Sample section was removed to make room for a MCAT Trial Section. The Trial Section is a voluntary section that asks you to test out questions for a future version of the MCAT.

Test format:

  • Tutorial (optional) – 10 minutes
  • Examinee Agreement – 10 minutes (not timed on practice test)
  • Physical Sciences – 52 items – 70 minutes
  • Break (optional) – 10 minutes
  • Verbal Reasoning – 40 items – 60 minutes
  • Break (optional) – 10 minutes
  • Biological Sciences – 52 items – 70 minutes
  • Void Question – 5 minutes (not timed on practice test)
  • Break (optional and not on practice test) – 10 minutes
  • Trial Section (optional and not on practice test) – 32 items – 45 minutes
  • Survey (optional and not on practice test) – 12 items – 10 minutes
  • Total Content Time – 4 hours, 5 minutes
  • Total “Seat” Time – Approximately 5 hours, 10 minutes

OzTREKK recommends that you visit the official MCAT website for all of the important details regarding the test.

About the Medical Leadership Program (MLP)

Partnered with the UQ Business School, the UQ Medical School launched the Medical Leadership Program in 2010.  This innovative, first-of-its-kind leadership program in Australia is designed to prepare medical school graduates to become future leaders in their chosen medical fields.  Those students who successfully complete the four courses will obtain a Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership to complement their MBBS degree.   There are three primary components to the MLP:

  1. Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership
  2. Seminar Series
  3. MLP Discussions

1. Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership Outline*

In order to obtain the Graduate Certificate in Executive Leadership, participating students will be required to  attend the Medical Leadership Program Orientation Program; attend all lectures; and successfully complete all assigned coursework, including the Course 4 project.

Course 1, “The Leadership Challenge,” will require four full days of classroom lectures (weekend sessions), and will occur during Year 2 of the MBBS degree.  This course will cover topics including strategic and organizational leadership; theories of leadership; tools of leadership; communication skills; team dynamics; leadership through emotional intelligence; transformational leadership; cultural change; the leader as coach; and action learning and planning.

Course 2, “Strategy in Action,” will require four full days of classroom lectures (weekend sessions),  and will occur during Year 2 of the MBBS degree. This course will cover topics including strategic decision making; change management theory and models; learning organizations and teams; building commitment to change; advanced strategies for strategic change; creativity and innovation; and action learning and planning.

Course 3, “Valuing Human Capital,” requires four full days of classroom lectures (weekend sessions), and will be occur during Year 3 of the MBBS degree.  This course will cover topics including strengthening the talent pipeline; cutting edge HR strategy; preparing for tomorrow’s challenges today; challenges facing HR; retaining and developing staff; succeeding in the war for talent; and action learning and planning.

Course 4, “Independent Medical Project,” will not require any classroom lectures.  Students will work on and complete their projects during Year 4 of their MBBS degree.  This course will be different from the others, in that it will provide students with the freedom to complete an individual or small-group project on a selected topic dealing with Medical Leadership.  While Course 4 will have one formal classroom presentation, and each student will be required to present his or her final project during year 4 of their MBBS program.

*Students in the Ochsner cohort will complete these courses in a different order.

2. Seminar Series

Each student will be required to attend at least 60% of the Medical Leadership Program Seminar Series for each year they are enrolled in the program.  Each seminar will be a very interactive, tutorial-type session, and will last approximately two hours.  During each seminar, students will interact directly with leaders from a variety of industries. These leaders will not only help students expand their professional network, but will also provide them with some unique insight and information from someone currently in a leadership position.

3. MLP Discussions

During these discussions, the Head of School of Medicine and the Head of the MBBS program at the University of Queensland will lead a discussion with all of the MLP participants in bringing all concepts from the other two components of the Medical Leadership Program into a group learning environment.  Students will be provided these dates as they are selected.

Monash medicine tutor trekking for a good cause

An adventure of a lifetime awaits Dr Chris Harvey of Monash University as she prepares to trek through northern Vietnam to raise money for disadvantaged children and families.

The medicine tutor at Monash University Medical School, GP at Brighton Medical Clinic, consultant at Ford Health and mother of three will head to Vietnam in May for a 12-day combined walking and cycling trek to raise funds for Melbourne based not-for-profit organization Windermere.

Monash Medical School's Dr Chris Harvey

Monash Medical School's Dr Chris Harvey

Dr Harvey, from the Department of General Practice at the Monash University Medical School, who initially pursued a career in medicine because of her desire to work in third world countries, said she saw the adventure challenge as the perfect opportunity to fulfill her goal.

“When I turned fifty I realized I still hadn’t got to my goal of spending some time each year working overseas, so many other commitments seem to get in the way,” Dr Harvey said. “I am really looking forward to the challenge and have never been to Vietnam before. Many of the Monash students I teach have had wonderful elective experiences and I know they would agree with me when I say I believe you often get more from these experiences than you could have ever imagined.”

Dr Harvey hopes to raise $6500 to take part in the challenge with $3000 going toward Windermere, which provides vital support services and programs for children and families in need in Melbourne’s southeast.

The experience will also incorporate visits to two charities for disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, Know One Teach One (KOTO) where participants will cook with students, and Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation to learn more about the vital work they do for children in crisis.

The Monash University graduate-entry medical program at the Gippsland campus is four years in length and is only available to those applicants who have previously successfully completed an undergraduate degree.

Admissions Criteria/Entry Requirements for Canadians:

1. Grade Point Average (GPA)

Applicants will need to have achieved a weighted GPA or qualification of 5.0 (out of 7.0) The GPA is assessed on the last three full-time equivalent years of the most recent undergraduate degree undertaken. This interview format allows the faculty to better determine applicants who possess the desired personal qualities required to succeed in the MBBS program at Monash University. The MMI format allows each applicant to be assessed by trained interviewers. MMI stations comprise a series of scenarios and associated questions focusing on an applicant’s relevant personal qualities including motivation, communication skills, critical thinking and ethical/empathetic reasoning.

Interviews in Canada are scheduled for March 18 – 22, 2013. Only those who complete an interview are eligible for a place in the medical program.

Applications to the graduate-entry medical program at the University of Queensland (UQ) for the January 2014 intake are now officially open via OzTREKK!

Apply now at the OzTREKK UQ MBBS How to Apply page!

Visit the OzTREKKUniversity of Queensland Medical School web page for more information:

  • Overview of the UQ medical program

Offers will be made to eligible applicants on a “rolling admissions,” first-come, first-served basis.

  • Completed degree (Bachelor, Master, PhD)
  • GPA equivalent to 5.0 on UQ’s 7.0 scale
  • MCAT score (minimum 8/8/M/8) or GAMSAT score (minimum of 50 in each section)
  • Compulsory consultative meeting with the School of Medicine

Three components contribute to the current selection for admission:

1. Performance in a key degree within the last 10 years. The GPA will be based on the student’s most recently completed key degree. A key degree is a bachelor’s degree, honours degree, master’s degree (coursework or research) or a PhD. Applications must meet a minimum average to be eligible. For the 2014 intake, an applicant must have a minimum average of 5.0 on UQ‘s scale of 7.0 (65%) to apply.

No deadline has been set for the final MCAT sitting eligible for assessment; however, students must be aware that only completed applications (including MCAT results) will be assessed. By sitting the test sooner, you are potentially increasing your chances of program spots being available when your application is complete. Please note, only MCAT results from sittings within the last two years prior to the year that you wish to be admitted to will be accepted.

3. Compulsory consultative meeting with the School of Medicine Program Director, in person, in Canada. Consultations will be one-on-one meetings with the UQ medical program director to determine your suitability for the program and motivations for practicing medicine. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the UQ medical program, clinicals, opportunities in Canada, licensing, internships in Australia, etc.
