UQ Law School Course Learns from Queensland Flooding

A UQ Law School Water Law course will use lessons learned from this year’s Queensland floods as part of an intensive introduction to Australian water resources law and policy.

As water becomes an increasingly scarce and contested resource, there is an even greater need for those involved in the water industry to understand the legal provisions being established for its management and protection.

The UQ Law School Water Law course tackles these issues within an intensive foundation program designed for lawyers and professionals working in primary industry, government and resource projects. What a creative way to utilize your surroundings to learn more about your industry.

The four-day course will be delivered by the UQ Law School and is coordinated by resource law specialist Alex Gardner – Associate Professor of The University of Western Australia, Adjunct Professor of the Australian National University and a Chief Investigator of the National Centre for Groundwater Research.

Dr. Gardner said water resources regulations have an impact on all sectors of the economy; especially primary industry, resource projects, land development and the water services industry.

Bond University Students Help with Post-Flood Clean Up

Bond University students have rolled up their sleeves to help flood-affected communities with restoration efforts across Queensland, demonstrating why this is such a caring university.

More than 60 Bond University students volunteered last Sunday to assist in the task of the post flood clean up in Goodna.

An initiative of the Bond University Students Association (BUSA) and the Bond International Relations Organization (BIRO) saw the students travel 90 kilometres north via bus and set off to assist Global Care, a Christian organization that assists post disaster recovery, in their restoration and cleaning efforts.

Bond University Law School and International Relations student and BIRO spokesperson, Harriet Johnston, admits the extent of damage becomes hauntingly real when you are amongst it.

“The mood of the group immediately changed when we saw the mark of the flood water,” said Harriet.

“The lines were well above the height of the bus, which made it vividly clear how seriously affected the community of Goodna was.”

Monash University Students Earn World Championship in Debate

Monash University Debate Champs

If we were to headline this story, it would go as follows: Victory for Victor, and Fiona Finishes First.

Monash University students have beaten teams from Oxford and Sydney University, and the London School of Economics to take the 2011 World Universities Debating Championships title.

Team ‘Monash A’, was made up of Arts/Law student Fiona Prowse as well as Victor Finkel, who is currently studying aerospace engineering. The pair
was voted the unanimous winner by a panel of nine judges after arguing on the affirmative side for an invasion of Zimbabwe.

In addition to the overall victory, Victor and Fiona were highly successful in the best speaker category, taking out first and third places respectively.

WUDC 2011, which took place from Dec. 27, 2010 to Jan. 4, 2011, was hosted by the University of Botswana. More than 300 teams from universities around the world took part in the highly-regarded event.

Teams competed in nine preliminary rounds, having just 15 minutes to prepare before each debate. Monash A was seeded first going into the knock-out finals against the top 32 teams.

“It feels absolutely fantastic to have won,” Victor said. “From the first day we joined the debating club in first year, both Fiona and I hoped to be able to win the world championships and it has taken six years of hard work to do so. It feels phenomenal.”

Victor said preparation was the key to the team’s success. He and Fiona undertook four months of research and more than 50 practice debates prior to WUDC 2011.

 Great job, Monash University!

We know we always say this, but OzTREKK loves hearing from our students about their experiences.

Even better, we love it when they blog about their life preparing for, and studying at an Australian university.

We recently heard from one Bond University Law School student, who is about to begin their law school journey. This student has decided to blog about their time at Bond University, and provide insight to their readers about studying law in Australia, including both opportunities and challenges put before them.
