University of Melbourne Arts Graduate Cast in Great Gatsby Remake

University of Melbourne’s recent arts graduate, Elizabeth Debicki, has been given the role of a life time!

Director Baz Luhrmann has cast Debicki, an unknown Melbourne talent fresh out of acting school, in a major role for his 3D remake of The Great Gatsby.

Debicki has landed the part of Jordan Baker, the love interest of narrator/protagonist Nick Carraway, who will be played by Spiderman’s Tobey McGuire.

Luhrmann explained the casting choice in a statement to the website, Deadline.

“It was a surprising result, but Elizabeth’s grasp of the material and her chemical connectivity to Tobey Maguire, in addition to her striking, athletic appearance, had us in a place where we were fully confident and ready to take the leap of giving the role of Jordan Baker to what, I guess, people would term ‘a discovery,’” he said. “We are thrilled.”

The cast also includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and possibly Australian actress Isla Fisher as Tom Buchanan’s mistress, Myrtle.

Cast alongside these top-named actors, Debicki told Australian website PerformersHub.au she was overwhelmed about scoring the career-changing role.

“I guess the bigger you dream, the further you have to fall if you don’t get it, so it can be a bit of a scary thing to be that ambitious. But I was,” she said.

OzTREKK staff members are avid Great Gatsby fans, and whenever we hear of a connection with one of our Australian university partners, such as the University of Melbourne, we can’t help but get excited!

University of Queensland Medical School Receives World Ranking

The University of Queensland Medical School has been ranked one of the world’s top universities in medicine, ranking 33rd overall in prestigious new international rankings released earlier this month.

This result correlates with UQ’s 43rd overall ranking in the top 200 QS World University Rankings in 2010, placing UQ among the top one percent of more than 9,000 international universities.

Rankings were based on a methodology that included academic reputation, employer reputation, and the number of citations per paper.

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Max Lu congratulated UQ researchers for their strong performance in the latest QS rankings, which proved they were equal to the world’s best.

UQ’s medicine offerings are the leading programs in their field in Queensland and ranked in the highest two rating bands — well above world standard and above world standard — in the recent Excellence in Research for Australia survey,” Professor Lu said.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2011, which were published in March, lists four Australian universities – UQ, the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney and The Australian National University – in its top 100 universities worldwide.

UQ received 81st ranking in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011 released last September.

UQ ranked among the top 18 universities in the Asia-Pacific region and 108th worldwide in the 2010 Academic Rankings of World Universities study conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Monash University Law School Chambers has new City Campus

Due to the outstanding success of the Monash University Juris Doctor and Monash University Bachelor of Laws programs, its inner city Law Chambers will be moving from its current location at 472 Bourke Street in the centre of Melbourne, to new premises at 555 Lonsdale Street from June 2011 onwards. The new Monash University Law School Chambers is still situated in the heart of Melbourne’s legal precinct, next door to Owen Dixon Chambers West and
in sight of the Country Court. The new premises will be a contemporary and sophisticated facility, renovated to exacting standards and resourced to optimize the teaching and learning experiences for both staff and students.

Monash University has one of the largest and most highly regarded Law Schools in Australia, providing legal education and training to over 2,800 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students can work under expert supervision with real clients on real cases at one of two community legal centres which are partners of Monash University Law School. Monash University Law School students can study a semester of their law degrees at the Monash Prato Centre in Italy or Monash Sunway campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

There are also a range of international internships, exchange and conference opportunities exclusively for Monash University Law School students. Princeton University recently invited Monash University to the Princeton Interactive Crisis Simulation held annually in the United States where delegates from around the world simulated real world complex political interactions on a traditional United Nations model. Many Monash University Law School graduates have gone on to become leaders in business, government and the legal profession.

Canadians Studying in Australia

OzTREKK Director Matt Miernik outlines how every student’s story is different

What’s your first thought when someone says, “A Canadian Studying in Australia”?

All too often, the image of a Canadian student studying abroad comes with the assumed notion they are in their early 20’s and have the free will to travel and study abroad.

But that isn’t always the case.

A number of people can easily relate to James Scott.

James Scott’s story about moving his family to Australia is real life and sharing his experiences makes us see this is a common occurrence.

Program of the Month: Occupational Therapy

Australian Occupational Therapy Schools are world-renowned for their
respective programs and clinical practice opportunities.

Occupational therapy is a health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. Occupation refers to everything that people do during the course of everyday life. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the occupations which give meaning and purpose to their lives. Occupational therapists have a broad education that provides them with the skills and knowledge to work collaboratively with people of all ages and abilities that experience obstacles to participation. These obstacles may result from a change in function (thinking, doing, feeling) because of illness or disability, and/or barriers in the social, institutional or and physical environment.

Three of OzTREKK’s universities offer a four-year Australian Occupational Therapy Program, but only one offers a master’s level qualification program for those wishing to become an occupational therapist. The following OzTREKK Australian Occupational Therapy School offers a graduate-entry occupational therapy program, which allows graduates to seek certification as an occupational therapist upon completion of the degree:

University: University of Queensland
Course: Master of Occupational Therapy
Duration: 2 Years

OzTREKK’s Favourite Australian Foods

As the long weekend approaches, the OzTREKK staff are excited to test out their barbecues for some amazing dinners.

It got us talking about our favourite kinds of Australian foods, and almost immediately, we started to drool, thinking about the Australian foods we love so much.

One OzTREKK staff member loves the Aussie burger as it is the king of all burgers. Ingredients can include avocado, mayo, beets, fried egg, great beef, tomato, lettuce, onion, bacon, ketchup, all together between two slabs of bread. It’s not a tidy eat, but definitely worth it for the value.

Tim Tam Cookies. We always get feedback from students after they have arrived in Australia, telling us how they’re converted Tim Tam Fans, as they can’t get enough of this wonderfully delicious cookie. We know the feeling. The chocolate covered outer layer with the cookie crumbs on the inside makes for the perfect treat. It’s not too sweet, but just right.
