He graduated with a JCU Bachelor of Business/JCU Bachelor of Laws with honours at the Faculty of Law, Business and the Creative Arts Graduation Ceremony

The 20-year old completed honours in law during his last semester after writing a 12,000-word research dissertation – a comparative analysis of the investigatory powers of ASIC.

Macquarie University Hospital Exec Honoured

Macquarie University Hospital COO Evan Rawstron was honoured this month for his work establishing the private hospital.

This week the Australian Private Hospitals Association recognised the ‘innovation, drive and determination’ that defined Rawstron and his team in their successful delivery of Australia’s first private university hospital. Opening on time and on budget, the Macquarie University Hospital conducted its first operation on June 16, 2010, and has continued to redefine the benchmark for private healthcare in Australia.

In an APHA award ceremony this week, Rawstron was recognised for his role in this outstanding achievement. The inaugural Australian Private Hospitals Association Valuing Award for Quality, Excellence and Innovation acknowledges Rawstron’s skills in management and the development of leading-edge processes.

Program of the Month: Australian Law Schools

Australian law schools and its students are undertaking exciting study opportunities, and so this month, OzTREKK has featured Australian Law Schools are our program of the month! Throughout Australia, more than 30 universities offer professional law degrees, which are open to international students. These include undergraduate and graduate-entry Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programs as well as postgraduate Juris Doctor degrees. As a Canadian seeking to become qualified to practice law, you have a range of study options abroad. As Commonwealth nations, the Australian and Canadian systems are based on English common law, and Australian Law Schools provide a solid foundation for students planning to practise law in Canada (with the exception of Quebec). OzTREKK’s aim is to assist you in choosing the best Australian Law Schools for you.

Both the Juris Doctor and the Graduate-entry Bachelor of Laws are graduate entry law degrees. They are designed to equip students for a career in the legal profession. Students must have completed an undergraduate degree to be eligible for entry into either one of these programs. The J.D. is a fairly recent program offering in Australia. The J.D. originated in the United States and is now offered at some Canadian and Australian universities. The following Australian universities offer graduate-entry Law programs:

Bond Law School Student Shares Experiences

Bond University Law School Student Ronald Kumar is currently completing the Bond Juris Doctor Program. OzTREKK interviewed him, and he shared his experiences in the classroom, on campus and sitting on the Canadian Law Students’ Association. Here is his story:

In Summer 2009, Ronald Kumar had just completed his undergraduate degree from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, and throughout university, the Vancouver native developed a passion for law.

He had heard about the Bond University Law School, but it wasn’t until he attended an information session with Professor Eric Colvin when he realized the Bond Juris Doctor law program was the academic pathway for him, so he applied via OzTREKK.

That September, Ronald arrived at Bond University to complete the Bond Juris Doctor program.

Now, one-and-a-half years later, he spoke to OzTREKK about his time in class, on campus and in Australia.

Ronald says he decided to come to Bond University to study law for a few reasons.

“I was attracted to the Bond University Law School because the duration of the JD program was two years, the program allowed for students to take Canadian Law courses, and the school was comprised of many Canadian law students,” he explains.

Moving thousands of kilometres away from home, Ronald said he didn’t know what to expect when he first arrived at Bond University. But any anxiety was quickly washed away.

Monash Law School Students Compete at Princeton Event

Monash University delegation was the sole Australian representative.

The conference, based on the traditional Model United Nations, aims to simulate more closely real world international interactions between state and non-state actors. Toward this aim each year a specific region of the world is selected, and this year’s geographic location was Latin and South America.

Delegates are then assigned to represent specific cabinet interests in the various governments. Monash delegates represented the Colombian Minister of Justice, the Brazilian Minister of Education, the Chief Intelligence Analyst of the DEA and the commander of the Eastern Bloc of the FARC. Talk about their fair share of responsibility!

The conference involves interactions between individual cabinets which are made up of approximately 12 students from each of the universities, and these cabinets are connected by a web-based interface simulating a news service. They received press releases, informing them of the international developments.
