Program of the Month – Australian Medical School

dora-pelletier-3There’s little doubt that a career in medicine is exciting. This month, OzTREKK highlights Australian medical schools in Australia, which offers Canadian students a good balance of receiving a world-renowned education combined with a great lifestyle in Australia:

Undergraduate-entry Australian medical programs are typically five to six years in length, and allow students to enter a medical program directly from high school.

Upon the completion of a six-year year medical degree, students complete a residency in their field of choice/specialization and then become licensed doctors.

The following Australian universities offer a medical program, which students can enter directly from high school:

Some of these universities also permit students, who have partially or fully completed post-secondary studies, to apply and commence the medical program.

Australian Medical Schools offer graduate entry medical programs in Australia which are typically four years in length, and allow students to enter a medical program once they have completed an initial undergraduate degree. Student who have also completed further study, such as a Master or a PhD program are also eligible to apply to the Graduate-entry medical programs in Australia.

Upon the completion of a graduate-entry medical degree, students complete a residency in their field of choice/specialization and then become licenced doctors.

The following Australian universities offer a medical program at a graduate-entry level, which are similar to those medical programs offered in Canada and the United States:

Australian Medical School FAQs

Q) What is the difference between the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree?

A) MBBS and MD degrees are equivalent medical degrees with different names. Degree titles differ around the world. The MBBS is offered in Australia, the U.K. and most Commonwealth of Nations states. MD degrees are offered in Canada and America, as well as countries such as Iran and Russia.

Australian universities do offer an MD (Doctor of Medicine); however, this is a higher doctoral, academic-research degree which resembles a Ph.D. An Australian MD is a post-MBBS degree. (Note: the exception to this will be the University of Melbourne’s professional Doctor of Medicine program, which will have its first intake in 2011).

Throughout North America, the MD is a first professional degree, which is not a research degree but a degree enabling graduates to become medical doctors.

In Canada and the U.S., the original medical degree that was granted to graduates was called the Bachelor of Medicine. However, in the 19th century, many North American medical schools changed degree titles from the traditional Bachelor of
Medicine to the MD.
