University of Melbourne Tour – A Bit of Burnley

dsc_0069OzTREKK’s Cathy McNally is currently in Melbourne to attend a conference at the University of Melbourne. Throughout her time in Melbourne, she will share her thoughts about both the city and university:

Yesterday, our group was shuttled to the Burnley Campus at the University of Melbourne. Past Flinder’s Station and along the Yarra River, we arrived at the campus, which has nine hectares of land, and has a serene setting.

This campus is where students enrolled in the Land and Environment programs will complete their programs. Burnley campus is located in the inner Melbourne area, but just a different area from the main campus. It’s a campus where you feel like you’re in a rural setting, but right in the heart of the city. For some, you can’t get better than that.

With a quick tour of the campus, we got to see a current project the University of Melbourne is completing, whereby they plant certain plants  on rooftops of city buildings to help absorb the heat and water shed on the rooftop.

The above photo is the example showcased by the university in how they undergo the project.

We then headed to the campus cafe, where the chef put together a lunch made from mostly local products, including mushrooms, duck, turnips and cheese!

Exploring Melbourne

OzTREKK‘s Cathy McNally is currently in Melbourne to attend a conference at the University of Melbourne. Throughout her time in Melbourne, she will share her thoughts about both the city and university:

dsc_00121

After a quick 30-hour journey, I finally made it to Melbourne. Never having been to the city, I was excited to explore it, especially as my fellow OzTREKK staff members have raved about the city

During our conference here at the University of Melbourne, we have been given Saturday (today!) to explore the city on our own. So  decided to head to the famous Queen Victoria Market where you can buy fruit, leather jackets and aboriginal art. It was the optimal way to see how Melbournians spend their Saturday mornings.

I also checked out a number of the iconic buildings within the central Melbourne area, including the Parliament building and Melbourne Museum.

Tomorrow, along with my conference colleagues, will descent on the University of Melbourne campus, where we will join 40,000 prospective students to see what the university has to offer. We will get a personal tour from a University of Melbourne student, who will share their experiences with us and showcase their favourite spots on campus. I hope it includes a stop for a flat white – a common coffee drink that I can’t get enough of while here in Australia.

Australia heads to polls for federal election

More than 14 million Australians are expected to head to the polls on Saturday, August 21 to vote in the federal election.

This election marks an interesting battle between the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party. Prime Minister and leader of the Australian Labor Party Kevin Rudd stepped down as Prime Minister in June, 2010, and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard replaced Rudd, making her the first female Prime Minister of Australia.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott is slowly climbing the leader rating, but Gillard still holds 50% popularity.

Top election issues include the economy, health, climate and border protection.

DID YOU KNOW?

Julia Gillard is a University of Melbourne Alumnus? She completed schooling at the Melbourne Law School!
