Bond University Wins International Law Competition

bond-3

Bond University law school students proved once again why the school is notorious for its law programs, taking home Best Defence Counsel and Best Oralist at the International Criminal Court Trial Competition in The Hague.

The competition was held Feb. 14-19, where 18 universities competed from 14 different countries, including Bond University and Canada’s Osgoode Hall.

The International Criminal Court Trial Competition allows top law students from around the world to improve their knowledge of the ICC and its proceedings.

Bond University Law School‘s mooter Ashleigh Light received accolades as Best Oralist, making this the second year in a row that the Bond Law School has won this International speaking prize. The university also won the award for Best Defence Counsel. Bond University was the only team besides Osgoode Hall to win two out of the six awards available.

The Bond University Law School team consisted of Light as Defence counsel, Daniel Ryan for the Prosecution, Hannah Maher as the Victims’ Counsel, Rowan Kendell as Researcher, Sarah Bond as Researcher and Senior Teaching Fellow Joseph Crowley as Coach.

Melbourne University Alum gather in Toronto

Though they may range in age, discipline and favourite footie teams, the University of Melbourne alumni share a special connection, and some of them got together last month at the National Club in downtown Toronto.

Consul-General Stefan Trofimovs (LLB, 1969) gave a warm welcome to his fellow alumni at the Feb. 12 event, and he encouraged engagement with the University of Melbourne, with each other, and with the wider ex-patriot community in Toronto.

Professor John Dewar, Provost, then provided alumni a summary of recent news from the university. With the announcement of the partnership between the University of Melbourne and IBM just that week, Professor Dewar relayed the excitement that was being felt on campus. He also gave a brief update on the continued roll-out of the Melbourne Model and the shift of the university to a graduate school model.

There is a small, but dedicated group of alumni in Toronto. If you are a former University of Melbourne student and live in Toronto, or if you know of additional alumni contacts or have ideas for events: TorontoAlum.UniMelb@gmail.com

Pre-departure Webinar this Friday

As part of OzTREKK‘s services to our students, we are really excited to host a pre-departure webinar this week for our students slated to begin their studies in Australia this summer. From across Canada, these students will have the chance to watch a live webinar hosted by OzTREKK Director Matt Miernik, while having the opportunity to ask questions and chat live with other students who are also enrolled in the Semester 2, 2010 intake.

Scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (Ontario time) this Friday, March 19, students will log in to a website, where they will then see Matt via video, and can ask him questions live. From find accommodations to opening up an Australian bank account, Matt has all the answers, and he is really looking forward to talking with the students.

“Each autumn, we usually host pre-departure seminars across the country for students enrolled in the semester 1 program,” he says. “Though fewer students enrol for semester 2, we still wanted to provide them with the opportunity to experience a pre-departure seminar. So this way, they can watch it from the comfort of their own homes and chat live with both myself and other students. I’m really excited for this opportunity to chat with the students and answer any questions they may have about life in Australia.”

What OzTREKK students have to say…

Want to know what past students think of OzTREKK‘s services? Here is a sampling of what some of our students have to say about their experiences working with us:

OzTREKK made everything run very smoothly. Communication was excellent, and I always felt well informed. I got the feeling they really care about the students. I am glad I chose to go through OzTREKK – they really demystified the whole application process for me.”

Petr Cigner
University of Queensland Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, 2009

“I had an awesome experience with OzTREKK. They were very helpful and knowledgeable, made the application process real simple, were there for me to answer any questions and in the end, gave me a $500 scholarship!”

Sergiy Zhyznomirskyy
Macquarie University Master of Commerce in Business, 2009

“I found my experience with OzTREKK to be both a positive and pivotal moment in my decision to attend Bond. The help and words of encouragement I received from both Matt Miernik and Nicole Buchanan were incredible. They were dedicated to providing me with the facts and support I needed to not only make my final decision to move to Australia, but also guided me through the pre-departure process.”

Sathiaseelan Nulliah
Bond University Juris Doctor, 2009

A Dog Surfing?

_dsc1883advertToo nervous to try out surfing while studying in Australia? Just remember – an old dog can always learn new surf moves…or something like that.

The Black Dog Surfing School in Byron Bay is OzTREKK tested and approved. With 1:5 teacher to student ratio, the lessons are very thorough and they guarantee you’ll be standing by the lesson’s end, or you get another lesson free!

OzTREKK staff members tried it out, and though we didn’t get to see company mascot, George the Black Dog, out on his board, we did walk away with salty hair, tired muscles and photos proving that yes, we did stand up and stay on our boards!

Happy surfing!

University of Queensland gets $10 million Thank You

University of Queensland Medical School alumnus Dr Ron Thomson has decided to say thank you for his education in a big way – with a $10 million bequest.

Dr Thomson, who graduated in 1956, is a former practising Surgeon and now practising Medico-Legal consultant, who spent most of his working life in Sydney. Over the past 18 months, he has been visiting his alma mater to decide where his substantial gift should be directed.

“Without my medical degree and all of what followed as a result, I wouldn’t have been in a position to give something back to the University in recognition of what it gave me, which was the opportunity to obtain that Degree,” he said.

An investment portfolio, presently estimated at $10 million, has been set aside in Dr Thomson’s will.

The gift will be invested and a range of UQ projects will benefit from its annual interest of approximately $400,000 to $500,000.

Dr Thomson’s bequest, which will also honour his mother, Pauline, will be split between research at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research and teaching in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pathology, in the UQ School of Medicine.

University of Queensland Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Greenfield compared the gift to that of the Mayne family – key figures in the establishment of UQ.

“He calls himself an ‘ordinary’ person but I disagree. He is undoubtedly extraordinary and the University will still be celebrating his life in 2110 – our bicentenary,” Professor Greenfield said.
