prof-mcgorry2

University of Melbourne Professor and Mental health expert Patrick McGorry was recently honoured with the country’s top distinction – Australian of the Year.
A program coordinated by the National Australian Day Council, the annual award is announced on Australia Day Eve. State and territory selection committees select four finalists for each award category, with one of these finalists becoming the state/territory award recipient.  State/territory award recipients then become the national finalists for the awards.
This year, Prof. McGorry from the State of Victoria was the top choice.

The 57-year-old Monash University alumnus is a leading international researcher, clinician and advocate for the youth mental health reform agenda. He is Executive Director of Orygen Youth Health (OYH), a world-renowned mental health organization for young people that has put Australia at the forefront of innovation in the prevention and treatment of mental illness.

The University of Melbourne and Monash University should be proud that one of its own was recognized for nearly 30 years of dedicated work.

Congratulations, Prof. McGorry!

William and Williams: British & Tennis Royalty embark on Australia

It’s been such a busy week for Australia!

Prince William made a  stop in Australia, a first-time return since he last visited in 1983 with his parents, Charles and Diana, when he was only a year old.

From his  conversation with a disadvantaged youngster about rap music in Sydney to a visit to the region where the Melbourne bushfires took place — William received warm welcomes from the country’s residents.

While in Melbourne, he stopped in to watch Roger Federer beat Romania’s Victor Hanescu in the Australian Open Tennis Championships – a venue where another set of Williams were praised for their good work.

Tennis star sisters Serena and Venus Williams took to the courts, and are currently continuing to vie for the top spot – especially for Serena who took home the cup last year.

What a great way to lead up to Australia Day, slated for next week!

Write on, Macquarie!

Staff at Macquarie University will soon be signing in to a new e-mail portal – Gmail.

Macquarie University and Google have teamed up for an Australian “first” -  by agreeing to provide 6,000 Gmail accounts to the University’s research, teaching and administrative staff.

Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor Steven Schwartz said that the initial launch had gone so well – with students reporting very high levels of satisfaction with Gmail (which happened in 2007) – that there was a compelling argument for the University to move staff emails to a cloud-based service also.

“We were spending a significant amount of money each year maintaining our own inferior email infrastructure that, despite our best efforts, was falling further and further behind staff expectations,” Schwartz said. “That’s money we would much prefer to spend on better teaching and research facilities for our staff and students, or on scholarships enabling students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access a university education.”

OzTREKK finds it pretty neat that a university is finding ways to save money, as opposed to spending it. When we look at the ways a university invests in its people, programs and infrastructure, this seems like such a simple way to cut costs, while remaining efficient.

CaRMs Executive Director Pens Column

Sandra Banner is the CaRMS Executive Director and she is well versed in the Canadian Physician Situation.

She recently penned a column for the Health Match BC organization, which works to attract physicians to practise medicine in British Columbia.

In her piece, Banner provided some interesting facts about International Medical Graduates, including Canadians studying medicine abroad.

Banner states that admissions to Canadian medical schools have increased by nearly 50 per cent in the past five years, but there are still three or four qualified applicants for every Canadian medical school entry position. As a result, many Canadians end up going abroad to study medicine.

In 2006, CaRMS conducted a pilot study and estimated that more than 1,500 Canadian students are enrolled in medical school outside of Canada and the United States. Banner noted that the most popular medical schools outside of North America include Australia, Ireland, Israel, the UK, Poland, Bahrain and the Caribbean.

To read Banner’s column, check out the Health Match BC Newsletter.
