OzTREKK Hosts Annual Study in Australia Fairs!

It feels like Christmas time at OzTREKK!

This time of year, we here at the OzTREKK headquarters share the same kind of anticipation that a six-year-old girl has several weeks leading up to Christmas.

It’s Student Fair season, baby.

Each autumn, OzTREKK hits the road to host our annual Study in Australia Fairs, where we tour Canadian campuses in order to meet with students interested in studying in Australia. This is the time of year when we invite OzTREKK Australian University Partners to attend so that the university representatives also have the chance to provide insight to Canadian students about the school’s programs, campus and lifestyle Down Under. It’s such a great vibe, too, because students have the chance to meet and chat with OzTREKK as well as university staff members, and they walk away with a better understanding of their study options in Australia.

So, you ask, where will OzTREKK be this autumn?

University of  British Columbia: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 – University of British Columbia, Student Union Building, 10am – 3pm

University of Alberta: Thursday, October 1, 2009 – University of Alberta, Student Union Building, 11am – 2pm

McMaster University: Monday, October 5, 2009 – McMaster University, McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC), 11am – 2pm

University of Guelph: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 – University of Guelph, University Centre (UC), 11am – 2pm

University of Western Ontario: Wednesday, October 7, 2009 – University of Western Ontario, University Community Centre (UCC), 11am – 2pm

York University: Thursday, October 8, 2009 – York University, Food Court – Student Centre, 11am – 2pm

And who will be there?

Good question!

Australian staff from the following universities will attend OzTREKK’s Study in Australia Fairs:

Bond University
James Cook University
Monash University
University of Melbourne
University of Queensland

If you are unable to make these information sessions, OzTREKK will also be attending postgraduate fairs across the country. To learn more about these dates, please click here.

OzTREKK’s Love Affair with Dilbert

Whenever we have meetings at OzTREKK, the first few minutes are often silent. Each of the OzTREKK staff are quietly reading, and it’s usually followed with a laugh.

The culprit? Dilbert.

We have a daily calendar which not only tells us which day it is (so handy!) – but provides us with some witty, sarcastic, and glorious excerpts from Dilbert’s work pad.

Our favourite character is Wally, who is constantly making efforts to uncover the secret behind successfully working as little as possible – he’s a good example for us as the what-not-to-do employee!

Got a favourite comic? Share it with us!

Melbourne Architect Students Investigate Bushfire Prevention

The University of Melbourne is well known for its hands-on and research-intensive approach to learning – and a back-to-school program proves this point true.

This is just one example of a student's design from the Back to School Program undertaken by University of Melbourne Master of Architect students.

This is just one example of a student's design from the Back to School Program undertaken by University of Melbourne Master of Architect students.

The effects from the state of Victoria’s February bush fires have brought University of Melbourne Masters of Architecture students to the drawing board, where they have been challenged to design a school with the region’s environmental hazards in mind.

Directed by Owen West, a design tutor at the University of Melbourne, recently brought the students in a design studio, asking them about the possibilities of building a safer school, to protect them from such fire hazards.

The students were asked to develop a design language and methodology which investigated the nature of educational space in terms of bushfire risk, pedagogy and sustainability, and come up with a master plan and design of a new primary school on a Greenfield site in Hurstbridge in outer Melbourne.

And the results varied.

Some designs balanced the need to protect the building fabric, while still connecting with the outside world. Other students examined the idea of bunkering, digging down into the earth and leaning on the environment as a means of protection.

West says the project brings awareness to the public and creates a forum for architects.

OzTREKK thinks this project is yet another example of how the University of Melbourne thinks outside the box – fascinating stuff!

OzTREKK Question – Do Aussie Men Make Bad Husbands?

Hmm….

Loathing housework has created a bad buzz for Australian husbands.

According to an Oxford University study, Australian women have a tough time finding a husband willing to help out around the house.

Economist Dr Sevilla-Sanz from Oxford University found that women wanting to settle down were better off finding a bloke from Scandinavia, the United States or Britain than Australia.

Based on her study of 12 developed countries, men and women were both more likely to cohabit or marry if they believed their partner would help out with the household chores and childcare.

But it appears that when it comes to finding a husband willing to help out, Australian women have a tough time.

Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, the US and Northern Ireland were judged to be the most egalitarian countries, making their men the most attractive marriage partners.

Dr Sevilla-Sanz’s study ranked Australia as the least egalitarian society, making its men unattractive marriage partners because they were more unlikely to do household chores.

“In egalitarian countries you might, in principle, expect to see women preferring to remain single rather than face the prospect of spending more time doing household chores,” Dr Sevilla-Sanz said.

The study’s findings were based on a survey of 13,500 men and women aged 20 to 45 from each of the 12 countries.

Each was asked about their attitudes to gender, housework and childcare responsibilities.

The study found that women living in less egalitarian countries were 20 to 50 per cent less likely to live with a man compared with women in more egalitarian societies.

Australian Pharmacy Schools – Program of the Month

Australian Pharmacy Schools are gaining popularity in the Health Sciences fields of study, and for good reason. Pharmacists are key members in the health care team, because of their specialized knowledge in the use and application of medications and also in their communications with patients. They are in a great position to provide valuable information on the formulation of dosage forms and this relates to drug product efficacy. Pharmacists are also able to provide patients with information on the appropriate storage of medications.

Their understanding of the functioning of the body systems and the impact of disease on these systems, allows them to provide insight into Disease State Management. Accessibility often makes pharmacists the first members of the health care team contacted by patients and thus are important primary health care providers. In this role they are able to provide advice to patients on their health in both community and hospital pharmacy.

The following OzTREKK Australian University Partners offer a pharmacy program:

-James Cook University Pharmacy School
-Monash University Pharmacy School
-University of Queensland Pharmacy School
-University of Newcastle Pharmacy School

Student Profile

Name: Teresa Kim,
OzTREKK student

Program: University of Queensland Bachelor of Pharmacy

How do you like the Queensland Pharmacy School?

The Queensland Pharmacy program seems to be organized, and they are putting students on placements in community pharmacies in the second semester for good learning experience. Other than the workload that piles up toward the final examinations in June, everything else is going well.

What would you tell other Canadians about your program?

I would recommend this program as well as the University of Queensland. UQ Pharmacy is one of the most reputable programs worldwide, and I think studying internationally provides you with good experiences. Also, because Australia is an English-speaking country, there is no language or cultural barrier.

What do you like best about living in Australia?
The weather! The weather is beautiful here in Australia.
Compared to long winters and lots of snow in Canada, Australia is always sunny with blue skies with temperatures of around 20 degrees. It’s awesome.

Queensland Medical School Students Coming Back to Canada

CaRMS Hosts Information Session for Canadian students studying medicine in Brisbane

Canadians studying in the University of Queensland Medical School program are expecting a special visitor this Thursday, August 13, 2009.

Sandra Banner, Executive Director for the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) plans to host an information session for all Canadians enrolled in the University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program.

This is an opportunity for Canadian students studying medicine overseas to hear about the current situation in Canada for International Medical Graduates, and how they can increase their chances of receiving a residency match in Canada following graduation at the University of Queensland.

In past years, Sandra has visited the Brisbane campus, and she told OzTREKK that she always looks forward to meeting the students, hearing their concerns, and delivering that message back home.

The CaRMs presentation will take place at the ES Meyer Lecture Theatre from 6 – 8 p.m. on August 13.

Canadian students enrolled UQ Medical School program who wish to attend this session can RSVP to international@som.uq.edu.au.

To learn more about CaRMS and its efforts to work with International Medical Graduates, check out this exclusive OzTREKK Interview with Sandra Banner.

Top 10 Things to do in Sydney

Most of our OzTREKKERs will first land in Sydney when arriving to Australia for school. Or, they’ll be living as a Sydneysider, attending Macquarie University.

OzTREKK students often use this opportunity to explore the city, whose iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge are often the catalysts that lure tourists to the world-famous city.

But blogger Chris Pirillo offers a mixed template in his Top 10 Things to do in Sydney List. Of course the Sydney Opera House makes the list, but he also includes some insight into visiting The Rocks and St. Mary’s Cathedral. It’s a worthwhile list to print off and pack in your suitcase, especially if you wish to explore the city before you take off to your university destination Down Under.

Check out the list on his blog:
