UQ Medical School Students like Ipswich Campus

To celebrate the University of Queensland’s 10th anniversary of its Ipswich campus, the Queensland medical school at the campus was launched this week by the Qimg_3838ueensland Governor, Dr. Penelope Wensley, AO.

At the launch, UQ Medical School Dean of Medicine, Prof. David Wilkinson said student places at the new UQ medical school Ipswich campus are expected to be in demand due to the boutique nature of the educational experience.

“The feedback we are getting is very positive, with students benefiting enormously from a small cohort of 39, which enables easier and more regular contact with clinical educators,” he said. “What has been created and will be maintained is a boutique medical education experience.”

The first medical students began their studies on the campus in January, some of which are international students. Professor Wilkinson said positive feedback being received from current students shows that the Ipswich study option would be in demand next year.

Research had shown that medical students who experienced clinical practice in a rural or regional setting were more likely to remain working in those areas after graduation, so the new teaching node would also help alleviate the doctor shortage, he said.

“The UQ Ipswich Campus will play a role in increasing the number of medical graduates who experience working in a regional area. They will gain clinical experience training at the Ipswich hospital and in GP clinics in the region,” Professor Wilkinson said.

New Zealand pushed closer to Australia

New Zealand has grown closer to Australia – literally.

Last week, the island located southeast of Australia, twisted out of place after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake ripped through the country.

The earthquake’s effects physically pushed New Zealand 30 cm closer to Australia!

Earthquake specialist Ken Gledhill told the Herald Sun that, “New Zealand just got a little bit bigger.”

He said the quake did it “in a few seconds rather than waiting hundreds of years”.

While it brings Australia’a eastern neighbour closer, there’s still a 2250km gap between the two islands.

The biggest quake in New Zealand for 78 years, caused slight damage to buildings and property when it struck the remote Fiordland region last Thursday. A tsunami was even generated – a tide gauge on the west coast recorded a wave of 1m.

Monash University students put up good argument

Whether or not you agree that Palestine should accept demilitarization in return for a guaranteed sovereign state, the argument earned Monash University students a prestigious championship title.

As we posted about earlier this month, Monash University in Melbourne hosted the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships, where more than 400 student competitors from 50 universities across 12 countries travelled to Melbourne to take part in the annual event.

After a week of debates, each school showcased skill and determination to win, yet the Monash University team 1 came out the frontrunners.

Made up of Amit Golder, Tim Jeffrie, and Fiona Prowse, the team won the grand final against team 1 from the Victorian University of Wellington (New Zealand) on the topic: That Palestine should accept demilitarization in return for a guaranteed sovereign state.

Amit was also awarded the Martin Sorensen Trophy for being the best speaker of the tournament. In a first, three other Monash University speakers made the Top 10 speakers of the tournament, and Monash University teams were also represented in the semi and quarter finals.

Australs convenor Victor Finkel said with wins in five of the last 10 years and with runners-up honours in two more, Monash University had a clear claim to being the best debating university in the region.

It’s tough to argue against that.

OzTREKK Hosts UQ Medical School Workshops

img_0760

OzTREKK Director Matt Miernik speaks with a student following the UQ MBBS Information Workshop in Calgary.

OzTREKK‘s Matt Miernik and Cathy McNally just returned from their trip to Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, where they hosted information workshops for students who have applied through OzTREKK to the University of Queensland’s Medical School program in Australia.

The workshops provided students with more indepth information about the University of Queensland medical school and options for coming back to Canada to practise medicine. Matt and Cathy had great time meeting with students and their family members.

Here’s a snapshot of our time in each city:

Vancouver – July 6:
-Matt provided a presentation that outlined UQ’s medical school program to the 25 who attended.
-He explained the core elective and rotation schedule, and outlined when they are, and where they can be, completed.
-A live Skype call with Prof. Ray Peterson, UQ’s medical school curriculum chair. Prof. Peterson outlined the four-year program itinerary and answered program questions posed by those at the workshop.
-Matt then provided an overview of the students’ options following graduation. Information included residency and licensing options both in Canada and abroad, and was directed to students who want to return to British Columbia to practise medicine.

Calgary – July 7:
-Matt provided students with the same presentation, but provided information relevant for Alberta residents. This includes the licensing and residency options for students who wish to return to Alberta to practise medicine.
-A Skype call was put in to Prof. Ray Peterson, and following that, Matt took questions.
-Thirty-one people attended the information seminar, and many of the questions Matt answered had to do with residency options following the successful completion of the UQ Medical School.

Toronto – July 8:
-With more than 100 people at this information workshop, Matt fielded many questions while making his presentation. Again, he outlined the program and campus life.
-Thea Watson, Senior Coordinator, Strategic Marketing and Outreach for Health Force Ontario travels across the world to recruit physicians to Ontario. She attended this session to outline residency and licensing options for students who wish to return to Ontario and practise medicine following completion at the UQ Medical School. Her experience was invaluable to students who wanted to learn more about their postgraduate residency options. She also provided information kits to students, which includes Australian-medical-school-specific information about their options following graduation.
-Following the session, Matt, Cathy and Thea spoke individually with students and their families to answer any questions they had about studying medicine in Australia.

OzTREKK was so impressed by the amount of research the students have already done on their own, and our intent was to answer any questions they had in order to provide students with the necessary information to help make the decision to study medicine at the University of Queensland medical school in Australia.

Monash Universty hosts Debates Championship

400 Debaters gather at Monash University for International Debating Championship

The top university debaters from across Australasia prepped their vocal chords for the region’s most pretigious championship, hosted at Monash University.

More than 400 student competitors from 50 universities across 12 countries will converge on Monash University‘s campus this week for the 35th Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship (Australs).

Monash University‘s Association of Debaters (MAD) is hosting the international students from Thursday, July 2 to Friday, July 10, 2009.

The format for the competition is the traditional Australian style of two teams of three speakers, one for the affirmative and one for the negative, with each speaker speaking for 6-8 minutes. Teams receive their topics just half an hour prior to the debate – could you imagine the intensity at that point inside that theatre hall?!

The 400 students will compete in eight preliminary rounds after which the top 16 teams will be ‘seeded’ and progress through to knock out finals.

Topics cover all areas of society, ranging from extremely controversial and emotive topics such as banning abortion, gay marriages, human rights and euthanasia to more mainstream political and social issues such as the need for carbon emissions trading schemes and sanctions on Iran.
