Working in the UQ Speech Pathology Simulation Clinic

Speech pathology focuses on the management of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Communication problems can occur in the areas of speech, language, voice, fluency (stuttering), hearing or literacy.

Within a “typical workplace environment,” UQ speech pathology students get hands-on practice during their time in the speech pathology simulation clinic. Like real life, students can assess patients with communication and swallowing difficulties in a hospital setting. Simulation clinics offer a number of benefits to the students, including learning to practice new skills, the opportunity for repetition of skill development, and the opportunity to gain a broad range of feedback to practice those skills before they need to use them in a real workplace environment.

UQ speech pathology ranked number one in Australia by students

The UQ Speech Pathology program has been ranked number one Australia wide by students for teaching quality and educational experience.

More than 178,000 students from Australian universities and non-university higher-education institutions rated their experiences in the 2016 federal Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) survey.

More than 94% of speech pathology students at UQ were satisfied with the quality of their “entire educational experience” and over 97% were satisfied with the “quality of teaching.”

The impressive results continued with students ranking the program number two on the skill development scale (student satisfaction 92.9%), and the learning resources scale (student satisfaction 94.7%).

I was surprised by the amount of real clinical expertise integrated into the learning environment. Not only does the course offer clinics each semester for the students, but the teachers also use their real clinical experience and expertise to promote learning and to allow students to think through clinical situations they may experience one day.”

UQ Speech Pathology Head Dr Nerina Scarinci said the results were a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire speech pathology team, including course coordinators, lecturers, tutors, and clinical educators, who all work together to ensure an exceptional experience for students.

“The UQ speech pathology team provide the best of both worlds for students, with expert knowledge and experience in both research and clinical practice,” Dr Scarinci said.

Final-year speech pathology student Monica Gehrke said she has found the lecturers at UQ to be experts in the fields they lecture in and passionate about the content they teach.

“Many lecturers provide insight and examples from their first-hand experiences in an area, so students are assured that the information being taught is highly relevant and applicable,” Ms Gehrke said.

The variety of opportunities provided to students include clinical placements from first semester, simulated learning opportunities in paediatrics, acute care, swallowing, and voice disorders, overseas placements, and interprofessional courses.

Second-year speech pathology student Isabella Loeskow moved from Bundaberg to live in one of the colleges at the St Lucia campus when she began her studies.

“Moving from my family and friends in Bundaberg to study speech pathology in Brisbane was a daunting but exciting move. I’m thoroughly enjoying my studies and in particular the placement opportunities.

“As I’m interested in working with children it was great to be able to do a full day placement at a school last year to get an understanding of what’s involved in this area of speech pathology.

“This year, we work for half a day every week in the UQ clinics. We see patients with a variety of experiences and this provides us with an opportunity to see what it would be like working in the real world as a speech pathologist.”

Australian rehabilitation sciences degrees: are you eligible to apply?

If you’re considering applying to a rehabilitation sciences degree at an Australian university, you know there can be a few items on your “how to apply” checklist that need attention. This is where OzTREKK comes in.

OzTREKK Admissions Officer Krista McVeigh specializes in programs like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, chiropractic science and audiology, and she knows the ins and outs of the specific assessment criteria required by each university. Here are some of Krista’s tips about getting yourself prepared when you’re ready to apply!

How do I know if I am eligible to apply?

If you are considering starting an application for one of our programs in rehabilitation sciences, first you will need to find out if you are eligible.

In order to determine this, you will need to find out two main things:

  • Have you taken the necessary courses to meet the program prerequisites?
  • Is your cumulative GPA (cGPA) competitive?

If you are unsure of this, I can generally let you know after taking a quick glance at your transcript.

Proving that you know your stuff

Please keep in mind that our universities will typically first screen based only on whether or not you have taken the courses to meet their prerequisites. Some schools have a form to fill out to highlight what you have taken for the admissions team, and most schools require you to send detailed course outlines for each subject.

If your application does not include a biomechanics course outline (as an example), they will not know that you’ve taken it. Furthermore, if they feel that your course outlines don’t meet their standard (i.e., they lack detail), your application’s assessment will stop and you will receive an unsuccessful outcome.

Admissions will not go into your transcripts for a GPA calculation until they have determined you’ve covered the material they require.

Which transcript are they looking at?

In order to calculate your cGPA, our universities will only be looking at the transcript from your most recently completed degree. If you have taken courses that are not part of that degree, they will not be calculated in that assessment; however, in order to see a full picture of your academic background, you are required to mail us all transcripts from any previous university or college studies.

Krista’s tips for a competitive application

Apply Early – Ideally,  you will need to have all of your documents sent to me no later than a week before the deadline. The more time I have to review your documents, the more time there is for feedback. There have been a number of students who have submitted their documents on deadline day who were unsuccessful because there were problems with their documents. Keep in mind that I receive a flood of emails and documents right before the deadline and that makes it difficult for me to review everything for you properly.

Include Course Outlines (Syllabi) as soon as possible – if the program that you apply to requires you to submit course outlines. This is in fact a requirement, and not a request.

  • Please ensure that your course outlines are detailed with information about what was taught in the course. This will often appear in a lecture schedule or list of topics.
  • Textbook, faculty information, and course dates are also important! Please take a look through your course outlines to ensure that they contain relevant detail before sending them to me.
  • If you don’t have your course outlines on hand, please contact the faculty under which you took the courses to request them.
  • Ensure that your course outlines are within 2 years of when you took the course. (For example, if you took a course in 2012, the outline must come from 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014. Please do not send me one from 2009 or 2015 as those are outside of the 2 years.)
  • When possible, please email the course outlines. Hard copies can delay the processing of your application.

UQ speech pathology researcher giving critically ill patients a voice wins 3MT

A PhD candidate whose research is giving a voice back to critically ill patients has won the University of Queensland’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final.

Anna-Liisa Sutt, a speech pathologist at Prince Charles Hospital and a UQ School of Medicine researcher, won both the overall and people’s choice awards for her presentation “Dying to Talk.”

Runner-up was Thisun Piyasena from the UQ School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, whose presentation was titled “Taming the chimera.”

Ms Sutt said her research was inspired by patients in intensive care units left voiceless by breathing tubes for ventilation.

“These vulnerable patients were desperate to communicate but were unable to talk because there was no air movement through their voice box,” she said.

“A speaking valve existed that could give them back their voice, but was not being widely used due to concerns that it could be harmful to patients’ lungs.

“My research showed that patients who used the speaking valve had better lung function, and it is now being used at Prince Charles Hospital.”

Ms Sutt is supervised by Professor John Fraser from UQ and Dr Petrea Cornwell from Griffith University.

UQ speech pathology researcher uses app to help stroke survivors

Dr Caitlin Brandenburg’s award-winning research is certainly something to get people talking.

The UQ speech pathology pioneer will soon begin testing a second version of CommFit, an app-connected device that encourages stroke survivors to speak more frequently.

“By measuring vibration through the collarbone using an accelerometer, we can tell how much the wearer has talked throughout the day,” Dr Brandenburg said.

“It’s essentially a language pedometer that is paired with personalised tasks to assist people to get better at conversation, and also more involved and engaged with their community.

“The idea is based on principles of neuroplasticity, being that as the brain repairs after damage you want to repeatedly practise the skills you want to improve.

“A lot of current speech rehabilitation methods revolve around naming pictures or singular tasks, which isn’t directly transferable to everyday conversation like CommFit is.”

CommFit, short for Communicative Fitness, is primarily targeted at people living with aphasia, an impairment of language production and comprehension that affects 80,000 Australian stroke survivors.

Dr Brandenburg said the refined CommFit pedometer, based on an earlier trial version, was more accurate, easier to wear, had longer battery life, and was more reliable and affordable.

“Our aim is to continue to develop it so it is as small as possible, as simple as possible and as affordable as it can be made.”

Early career researcher Dr Brandenburg, 26, has received encouragement on several fronts. She has won a $15,000 UQ Collaboration and Industry Engagement Fund grant; National Heart Foundation Vanguard and National Stroke Foundation Seed grants to develop the CommFit app; was a top-10 finalist for the Queensland Fresh Science competition; and her abstract on CommFit won the Stroke Society of Australasia Nursing and Allied Health Scientific Award.

UQ Collaborators on the CommFit project are Professor Linda Worrall and Professor Dave Copland.

Dr Emma Power of the University of Sydney and Dr Amy Rodriguez of the Center for Visual and Neurocognitive Rehabilitation (USA) are also involved with CommFit.

From Canada to Brisbane: a UQ Speech Pathology student offers advice

Former OzTREKK student Mackenzie Gunn will soon be in her second year in the Master of Speech Pathology Studies program at the University of Queensland. Many Canadian students are in the midst of exploring their study options: Study in Canada, or study abroad? How do you know which option is right for you?

Even though she’s swamped with coursework and clinical practice, the Orono, Ontario native has kindly offered to describe her program and her time at UQ in order to help future students who are interested in studying speech pathology in Australia!

The reason behind my choices

I have always had a passion to work with children and towards the area of teaching and helping others. I was drawn to speech pathology because you get to work one on one with patients to treat their specific needs and aid them with vital life skills.

Initially, I chose the University of Queensland because of its strong affiliation with Canadian certifications; however, after researching, what I really liked about the university is the design of their program, as it is five semesters opposed to four. This allows students to have a summer break and recharge in between semesters, which is lovely.

I absolutely love the program so far! From second semester onward the courses are specific and job related with aids for future reference. The staff aims to prepare you for the workplace in the various areas of speech pathology.

The campus is absolutely gorgeous! It has maintained an older charm, but classrooms are up to date and functional for the teachers’ and students’ needs. All of your lectures are recorded and available online to re-watch in case you missed anything in class. Additionally, all of the classroom sizes are true to the number of students; thus for the program they are relatively small, which is ideal for learning.

After graduation… and clinical hours

Eventually, I plan to return to Canada. The UQ Speech Pathology School is dedicated to ensuring that Canadian students meet the hour requirements for Canada, as they are higher than Australian requirements. It is easy to get fully accredited in Canada: you just have to write and pass an exam. It is very important that you keep track of these hours throughout your program as the Canadian hours (or provincial hours) differ from Australian hours!

Time to settle in and explore

During my first year, I lived just off campus at Unilodge@St.Lucia and paid $360 a week. This was all-inclusive (i.e., internet, hydro, social events) and less than two minutes to the main building for speech pathology students. OzTREKK was very helpful in finding me this apartment, as it was one of their suggestions and I would recommend it or one similar for the first six months to a year for pure convenience and ease while you get to know the city. This was very convenient and a lovely apartment.

I have recently moved to the suburb of Milton and pay $230 a week plus utilities. Milton is close to the city, has many restaurants, stores, and bus options. It is a great location between school and downtown. Domain.com.au and rental.com.au are both excellent sites to use if you are looking for an apartment.

Australia is very diverse and different from Canada in so many ways, but similar at the same time, and it still feels homey. Brisbane always has festivals, markets, and various restaurants around the city to explore each weekend. My favourite part about my experience, besides my program, is that I am experiencing so many new things I never thought I would. Whether it is traveling somewhere new, visiting a new restaurant, taking the City Cat (ferry) or being able to go to the beach regularly—it is a different way of life from Canada and a great experience!

My advice for anyone considering studying in Australia

The best advice is to go in with an open mind! It will be a great adventure—make sure you are well prepared for it. Give yourself lots of time: get your visa in order, research an area you would like to live in, update yourself on Canadian requirements and research the city for fun things to do. You’re there to study, but you also have to make it a home for the time you’re there, so get to know the people in your cohort and the city.

Make sure you have a balance between school and other things such as friends, sports, or even television. At first it is strange being away from your friends and family, but there are many other Canadians, along with other international students, who are doing the same thing. It is very easy to bond and support one another because of this. Build a support network in Australia that you can count on and do fun things with so you can immerse yourself and make a home in Australia while you are there.

Everyone enters into this experience very differently, but make the most of it! Australia is amazing and Brisbane is a great city to live in. It is a big city, but small enough that it still feels homey. You won’t be disappointed that you made the choice to study at the University of Queensland.

UQ is hearing what the community says about e-health

One in six Australians is affected by hearing loss, and that figure rises to 70 per cent for older people.

UQ Speech Pathology researcher Dr Carly Meyer is leading a study to see if telecommunications devices can help those affected.

“The prospect of using modern technology can be daunting to some, but the internet, mobile phones and tablets have the potential to provide individualised healthcare,” Dr Meyer said.

“We are trying to find out how adults with hearing loss currently use telecommunications to support their general health and whether there are avenues to improve that.

“The study will look at all aspects of e-health and the use of technologies such as phones, email, internet, apps and videoconferencing.

“Ultimately the aim is to reduce the impact of hearing loss on individuals, their family and friends.”

UQ researchers are working in collaboration with the HEARing Cooperative Research Centre on the project.

The centre brings 21 Australian hearing healthcare organisations together for the first time.

Research by Dr Meyer and colleagues has found gaps in current practice could be addressed through modern technologies.

For example, technologies could be used to connect with family members during hearing rehabilitation.

“With increasing noise levels in everyday life, and an ageing population, the number of individuals with hearing loss is only expected to rise.

“Looking at new ways of addressing the hearing and communication needs of the community has to be prioritised.”

The researchers are recruiting volunteers with hearing loss or who have an adult family member or friend with hearing loss to participate in the study. Volunteers will be asked to complete a survey about their experiences with telecommunication technologies in healthcare and to provide ideas and feedback about areas of opportunity. Tasks can be done at a time and place suited to the volunteer and all participants will be in a draw to win a $100 gift card.

UQ health sciences students head to Vietnam and Timor Leste

It’s a time for learning, discovery and engagement. Students from the UQ School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences will spend the coming month in Vietnam and Timor Leste. Head of School Professor Louise Hickson said the immersive educational experiences would develop the students both professionally and personally.

“We will be building an ethos of international collaboration and cooperation in our occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech pathology students,” Professor Hickson said.

“The students will be placed with the University of Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy in Vietnam and the Centre for National Rehabilitation in Dili, East Timor.

“There, they will work with interprofessional teams to engage in healthcare and rehabilitation services.

“We’re contributing to building an Australian workforce that understands global health perspectives in a culturally diverse context.”

This will be the fifth occasion that UQ has sent students to the University of Hue, and the third time it has placed students within the Centre for National Rehabilitation in Dili. Students undertaking the Timor Leste placements have received funding as part of the New Colombo Plan Mobility Program, which promotes collective strengthening of countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences Executive Dean Professor Bruce Abernethy said that encouraging experience abroad was central to how the University of Queensland conducted itself as a global institution.

“This project recognises the need to produce flexible, broad-thinking, culturally aware graduates,” Professor Abernethy said.

“Students are enabled to become outward thinking in their healthcare focus, via engagement with organisations, clients and families.

“Students demonstrate the ‘UQ Advantage’ through embodiment of the rich array of opportunities provided by our university partnerships network.

“Assessing student outcomes from these experiences also allows us a chance to strengthen UQ’s reputation as a global leader in teaching and learning research.”

Both groups of students—in Vietnam and Timor Leste—commenced the in-country experience on May 9, 2016 and finish on June 3, 2016.
