Griffith Pharmacy students compete in simulated world

A simulated pharmacy is part of a new cutting-edge educational game to be used by Griffith Bachelor of Pharmacy students as part of their course.

Signalling a first in Australia, the PharmG game offers students the chance to compete as teams in a simulation game working in a rich educational setting with a set number of patients, which they either lose or gain based on their performance.

Originating from the University of Groningen in The Netherlands, GIMMICS (as the game is known in The Netherlands) requires final-year students to compete against teams of peers or colleagues from across the world and aims to be as close to real life as possible.

“PharmG provides our final-year students with a fully immersive workplace which completely reflects what they would be facing in a real-life pharmacy,” says Dr Gary Grant from the Griffith School of Pharmacy.

“Starting from week six, students will each be spending thirteen full working days in the PharmG environment where they will hone their skills.

“Like other simulation games, e.g., SimCity, pharmacies start with a set number of patients which they will either lose or gain based on performance in activities. Activity includes dispensing of prescriptions, medication reviews, verbal walk-in cases, responding to phone calls, assignments and presentations etc.

“Actors will play the part of patients and will test every layer of pharmacy skills in our students. Meanwhile time management and team workload is completely at the discretion of the team to organise.

A major educational advantage

“This technology represents a major educational advantage,” says Dr Grant. “It also encourages interaction that generates real cognitive or socio-cognitive conflicts, provides a solid construction of knowledge; an autonomy in the learning process and an eventual transfer of acquired skills.”

The introduction of the simulated pharmacy learning method follows the school’s introduction last year, of a virtual learning tool  allowing students to work in different environments including hospital and pharmacy from anywhere in the world without having to leave the classroom.

Griffith pharmacy grad’s passion for rural practice

Becoming a community pharmacist in country Queensland was the last thing on Nadia Venzke’s mind when she began studying at the Griffith School of Pharmacy.

Now the Master of Pharmacy graduate from the Gold Coast is passionate about rural pharmacy practice and couldn’t be happier. Not only has she got the qualifications for a career in her specialist area, but she was also named Goondiwindi Employee of the Year 2015 and met her future husband in her new hometown.

Graduating from Griffith’s Gold Coast campus in 2011, Nadia says she had never considered moving to a rural town once it was time to undertake her internship and become a registered pharmacist.

“Originally, I was unsure about Goondiwindi, thinking that it would be too small with only 5,000 people in the town, and a long four-and-a-half-hour journey from Brisbane. I thought that it may be too quiet. Plus when I arrived for my interview, I was a little taken aback at how the pharmacy seemed to be stuck in a time warp from the sixties,” the Griffith Pharmacy graduate says.

“However I had a really great meeting with the owners of the business where they flew me over the area in their light aircraft whilst interviewing me for the position! They told me all about the close-knit community in Goondiwindi and how it is an affluent social centre for remote Queensland, and suddenly I was hooked on life as a rural pharmacist.”

Nadia, who was born in Namibia, says the town has not only suited the social side of her personality, but has also been very nurturing for her career.

“Shortly after relocating the pharmacy was named Chemmart Pharmacy of the Year and then I was nominated by the Goondiwindi Rotary Club to be part of Rotary District 9640 to go on a Group Study Vocational Exchange program to the US and learn more about my industry. That was a fantastic experience which really helped me to grow professionally.

“Additionally I was nominated by my boss and subsequently named Goondiwindi Employee of the Year 2015 by the Border River Chamber of Commerce.”

Nowadays, Nadia says she doesn’t know whether she could go back to living and working in a city.

“I am learning a lot about business and am considering buying my own store; becoming involved with the Queensland branch of the Pharmacy Association has been a big help in teaching me about some of the business aspects.

“I have not become involved with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia yet but I hope to in the future. I also just got the title of Dispensary Team Leader so I am managing the dispensary team and meeting training and HR needs in the business.

“Coupled with meeting my lovely fiancé here and the great social life we have, I feel very blessed.”

Nadia says she also enjoys mentoring Griffith Pharmacy students that come through the business for their internship year.

“From my experience I enjoy mentoring the Griffith students as they are more work ready, with more real-life work knowledge.”

The school’s 400 partners offer clinical and research placement opportunities for students on the Gold Coast, in rural Australia and overseas. The newest of these includes a placement rotation through Indonesia where students experience hospital, community and industrial pharmacy, and a hospital/research placement in Singapore. These activities reflect the strong partnerships that the School of Pharmacy has with clinical and research centres around the world.

Griffith’s School of Pharmacy was the first pharmacy school in Australia to introduce Stage 1 Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy training, giving graduates an advantage when developing their career in medication management. The school also introduced vaccination training for students in 2013, ahead of the Queensland Government trial.

With outstanding facilities such as a professional practice laboratory with model dispensary and a dedicated formulations lab and aseptic dispensing unit, supportive staff and active student organisations, the Griffith School of Pharmacy offers students an exciting opportunity to learn pharmacy and pharmaceutical science in a vibrant world-class environment.

Pharmacy jobs boom puts Griffith at the top

Booming job prospects within the pharmaceutical industry and a burgeoning image of Griffith Pharmacy graduates has led the university to increase its degree program offerings in pharmacy and pharmacology.

In 2016, Griffith will launch Australia’s first Bachelor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, as well as a graduate-entry Master of Pharmacy, which will be the only one of its kind in Queensland. These will complement the already established Bachelor of Pharmacy.

“At any time if you take a look at the jobs websites such as seek.com there are a multitude of jobs available across the whole breadth of the pharmaceutical industry,” says Professor Andrew Davey, from Griffith’s Menzies Health Institute Queensland.

Shortages of pharmacists

“There are real shortages of pharmacists throughout regional Queensland, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry, clinical trials, government and research.

“This, along with the expanding role of the pharmacist in the overall healthcare of patients, means that there are fantastic opportunities for appropriately skilled graduates.

“From drug discovery to clinical use, from community pharmacy to pharma-covigilance, regulatory affairs and medication management, there are a whole host of career opportunities that graduates can undertake.”

Government statistics also show that within four months of graduation, Griffith Pharmacy students are either in a job or have advanced to higher qualifications.

Griffith graduates have an excellent reputation in the workforce.

Griffith Pharmacy graduates are well trained in all aspects of pharmacy and with a high level of clinical knowledge that is easily adapted to a community pharmacy setting; they excel above other graduates,” says Justin Armstrong, Pharmacist Manager at Amcal Chempro in Ashmore.

The new Bachelor of Pharmacology and Toxicology has been designed to fill a gap in demand areas such as chemicals, mining, agriculture and the environment. It is also offered as a double degree with either business or law enabling students to specialise in key areas.

Australian Pharmacy Schools in Australia

Study pharmacy in Australia

Pharmacy programs in Australia are structured quite similarly to many other professional programs offered at Australian universities. Students can enter a pharmacy program directly from high school. Students from Canada who have already completed an undergraduate degree may also apply for entry into Australian Bachelor of Pharmacy programs.

Some Australian Pharmacy Schools offer credit transfers if you’ve already completed particular undergraduate studies. This means that you may be able to transfer directly into Year 2 of the program, making the program length three years, instead of four.

In Canada, the Australian Master of Pharmacy program format is not currently recognized by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC). The PEBC prefers that students complete an Australian Bachelor of Pharmacy program instead, as this course format is recognized and can be assessed by the PEBC. OzTREKK recommends that students who wish to return to Canada to gain pharmacy certification study one of our Australian Bachelor of Pharmacy programs.

Bachelor of Pharmacy

This is an undergraduate degree that leads to a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and is designed to equip students for a career in the pharmacy profession. Australian students, like those from virtually all other Commonwealth countries except Canada, can enter the Bachelor of Pharmacy program directly from high school.

The following Australian universities offer Bachelor of Pharmacy programs:

Griffith School of Pharmacy gets virtual learning

The Griffith School of Pharmacy’s innovative virtual learning environment has opened just in time for the new students to be introduced to a whole new way of learning.

“This cutting edge facility is the future of technology-driven education and will provide students with a truly immersive virtual environment,” says Dr Gary Grant, Deputy Head Learning and Teaching from the Griffith Pharmacy School.

The new teaching tool, which opened Feb. 24, offers students a totally immersive and interactive experience enabling them to work in different environments including hospital and community pharmacy from anywhere in the world without ever having to leave the classroom.

“Students are able to completely control the pace of their learning and interact with virtual patients in more or less any environment that is relevant to their work-integrated learning needs,” says Dr Grant.

One big advantage of the new technology will be to facilitate better student preparation for placements, which will give both the student and their supervisor a better on-site experience.

In addition, the new technology is to be made available on portable devices allowing students to easily interact with this tool in any environment.

“This facility—which can be adapted for students from all health disciplines—will not only be a highlight for Griffith but will also showcase the fact that we are at the forefront of this type of education,” says Professor Andrew Davey, Head of Griffith School of Pharmacy.

Griffith Pharmacy organises pharmaceutical industry congress

There has never been a greater time for student pharmacists to contribute towards Australia’s future healthcare.

This was the message last week from Rhonda White, co-founder of the Terry White Chemists Group, at the 2015 Gold Coast National Australian Pharmacy Students’ Association Congress.

Organised by the Griffith University Association of Pharmacy Students (GUAPS), in conjunction with the Griffith School of Pharmacy, the congress—which ran January 24 – 30 at the university’s Gold Coast campus—was the premier event of the student calendar and is well regarded by industry professionals and educators.

“There has never been a time in pharmacy in the whole of our nation’s history that change has become so important,” Ms White AO says. “As we see the massive cost explosion of running a national healthcare service, new approaches are being explored, especially within allied health services such as community pharmacy and especially with the wider scope of practice that has been put in place in this profession.

“Last April we saw Queensland leading the way with its community pharmacists offering vaccination services for cold and flu. This is now set to be expanded to whooping cough and measles vaccinations.

“This type of service, along with others that are being looked at, is just one example of how community pharmacists are helping to contribute to improvements in our healthcare system and its future delivery.

“Student pharmacists should understand that there are currently many changes afoot to healthcare delivery and the patient is really at the centre of this, in dictating what they would like to see. Healthcare demands are growing exponentially and this is forcing a greater demand on allied health care. Pharmacists will need to be prepared to pick up the baton in helping to rethink the health of the nation.”

An array of speakers

This year’s Congress, has the theme Step Into The Future… A Future Beyond the Counter, saw an array of speakers from various fields of the pharmaceutical industry and an innovative focus on education sessions.

The sessions were aimed to show students that the pharmaceutical industry is more than just “licking and sticking,” where in fact it is branching out into many areas, such as immunisation and diabetes check-ups.

“The pharmaceutical industry is ever-changing, and this Congress will teach students how it is revolutionising and how they will need to adapt to the changing landscape,” said John Quinn, second-year Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences student and publications chair for the congress.

“The event will bring together 18 pharmacy schools from across Australia for a week of education, networking and social events and will be the largest Congress to date, with 360 students to be in attendance.

“We are extremely happy to have such a strong business woman from the profession as Rhonda White at this year’s event.”
