Australian dentistry school students: adjusting to life in Australia

OzTREKK Australian Dental Schools Admissions Officer Alexa visited Australia for the first time this past summer. With the cold Canadian weather we’ve been having (already!), she’s been reminiscing about her trip. Here are some of the surprises she encountered and how OzTREKK dentistry students are handling living Down Under! (Hint: They are loving the weather!)

What do OzTREKK students say about adjusting to life in Australia?

“It wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. I think it’s because I had time to get ready for my move. I’m loving every minute here and I’m so happy I decided to study in Australia.” Griffith dentistry student

“It’s been great so far. A bit cold here in Orange but nothing compared to Canada’s winter. The people are very nice and helpful. The campus is small so you get to know everyone. It’s been a very smooth process so far. We get mid-session breaks 2 weeks each semester so if you don’t plan on going back home my advice for you is to go visit other cities here. Sydney is really nice and there’s loads of stuff to do. The Gold Coast is also amazing especially during winter to escape from the cold here in Orange. Lots of beaches everywhere!” CSU dentistry student

“Amazing!!! I love my University and program; I love having the balance of studying and fun in the Gold Coast. My dental program provides state of the art facilities and the professors have been very helpful through the transition. I also got credited for many courses which saved me a lot of time and money.” Griffith dentistry student

Australian dentistry schools

Get ready for your OzTREKK orientation, dentistry students!

“It is going well, I took to it fairly quickly though I still adapt to new things every day. [I recommend students] scuba dive and hike.” JCU dentistry student

“Love it! It is very similar to Canada but with better weather.” Melbourne dentistry student

“It has been far easier than expected despite it being my first time living on my own. The country is well tailored for Canadians. Enjoy the weather while you can. There are plenty of sites to see and places to visit.” Melbourne dentistry student

“Fantastic! I love it here! It will be a shock when you first arrive because it is so damn hot and that lasts until close to April. May starts cooling off. June and July were quite cold, especially early mornings and nights and I pulled out all my Canadian sweaters! The people are great. It feels a lot like Canada!” UQ dentistry student

“It’s been great. If my entire family didn’t live back home I’d probably stay here forever.” Sydney dentistry student

“It definitely took some time, but it’s pretty good. Australians are definitely more relaxed in Perth and are accustomed to a slower lifestyle. But the weather is amazing and the beaches are beautiful! The only thing I’m still having a hard time adjusting to is the time the shops are closed. During the week, most malls are closed by 5 pm!” UWA dentistry student

Think you might like to study dentistry in Australia?

Graduate Entry: Some Australian dental schools offer a graduate-entry dental program. This pathway is exactly the same as in Canada, where you first have to complete an undergraduate degree, such as a Bachelor of Science, and then you apply to a four-year dental program.

Undergraduate Entry: Some Australian dental schools allow you to enter into a dental program directly from high school or with a partially completed undergraduate degree. These undergraduate degrees are typically five years.

Australian dental school application deadlines

Australian dental schools are very popular among Canadian students. Why? It’s because of the reciprocal agreement between Canada and Australia allowing international graduates of accredited dentistry programs from both countries to be considered the same as domestic graduates. Canadians who have graduated from an accredited Australian dentistry program are required to write the same National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) Written Examination and Objective Structured Clinical Examination as someone who graduated from a Canadian dentistry program before he or she would be licensed to practice.

Now on to the good part: the application deadlines. Remember, it’s always best to apply as early as possible since dentistry admissions can be very competitive! If you’ve already filled out an Australian dental schools application, now is the time to get the remaining app documents in!

It’s “DAT” time of year, pre-dentistry students!

Upcoming Dental Aptitude Test dates

Applying to the 2018 intake at an Australian dental school?

Many pre-dentistry students will be writing the Canadian DAT this February 2017. The Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) is conducted by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) to help students assess their aptitude for a career in dentistry and to assist dental schools in selecting first-year students.

It's

Don’t forget to register to write the DAT!

As there are a limited number of DAT test centres and seats available, applicants are advised to register as early as possible for their preferred test location and date for the DAT and well in advance of the registration deadline.

  • Saturday, November 4, 2017 (Deadline to register is September 2017)

Canadian Dental Aptitude Test Format

There are four examinations included in the English DAT and three examinations included in the French DAT. The tests are administered over a half day and include the following:

1. Manual Dexterity Test – 30 minutes

Not all Canadian or Australian dental schools use the Manual Dexterity Test (MDT) as part of their admission requirements. This test consists of carving a specified model out of a cylindrical bar of soap specially made for the DAT.

Neither the University of Melbourne nor the University of Sydney require this section to be completed to be considered for entry.

2. Survey of Natural Sciences – 60 minutes

3. Perceptual Ability – 60 minutes

4. Reading Comprehension (English DAT only) – 50 minutes

Students from Canada who have already completed an undergraduate degree may apply for entry into Australian dentistry programs at either the graduate-entry or undergraduate-entry levels.

Griffith dentistry researcher leads nano-engineered dental implants study

Our outstanding Australian dental schools are at it again.

The complications and high costs associated with dental implants could be a thing of the past as Griffith dentistry research aims to reduce the associated risks of infection using cutting-edge nanotechnology.

The study is being led by post-doctoral researcher Dr Karan Gulati from the Griffith School of Dentistry and Oral Health/Menzies Health Institute Queensland, who is presenting his research at this week’s Gold Coast Health and Medical Research Conference at the QT Hotel, Surfers Paradise (Dec. 1–2).

Hundreds of thousands of Australians need dental implants each year but the risks of infection and poor stability can be high, particularly if the patient has a condition such as osteoporosis or diabetes, which may compromise the dental healing process.

However early stage nanotechnology techniques in animal studies are now showing promise in allowing faster integration of an implant in order to prevent bacteria from setting in.

Nanotechnology is science, engineering and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers.

“The technology I am using enables me to nano-engineer the surface of commercially established implants with nanotubes, which can later be loaded with drugs such as antibiotics or proteins for maximised therapeutic effect.”

“When these are inserted into the patient’s jaw, they improve soft- (gingiva) and hard-tissue (bone) integration and therefore dramatically decrease the likelihood of oral microbes being able to enter the tissue,” says Dr Gulati.

“Based on the initial results, we expect to achieve early implant stability and long-term success of such therapeutic dental implants.

“In addition, the overall costs to the patient are expected to be reduced, considering that there will be no expenses associated with follow up drug treatment, cleaning of possible bacterial attachment or correction of implant failure”

The groundbreaking work is still in the very early stages; however, clinical trials are planned to commence in 2017.

Dr Gulati says this implant technology can easily be extended to orthopaedic implants.

About Griffith Dentistry

Modern laboratories, including a commercial dental laboratory, will help them develop key skills in a fully supervised environment.

Program: Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science/Graduate Diploma of Dentistry
Location: Gold Coast, Queensland
Semester intake: February
Duration: 5 years

Entry requirements

To be eligible to apply to Griffith University’s Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science, applicants must have
